Rearrange the following sentences in the correct order and put the numbers in the given boxes:

(1) He saw a grass-cutter coming from the other direction.

(2) The grass-cutter was surprised.

(3) He reached the old mud hut.

(4) He wandered in search of the clouds.

(5) He asked the grass-cutter if he had noticed the clouds.

(6) He turned onto the dirt track.

Answer the following question :

“But no one could give him a satisfactory answer” — Why do you think no one could give him a satisfactory answer? (“কিন্তু কেউ তাকে সন্তোষজনক উত্তর দিতে পারেনি” – কেন তুমি মনে করো কেউ তাকে সন্তোষজনক উত্তর দিতে পারেনি?)

Ans: I think that no one could give him a satisfactory answer because no one was as sensitive as he about clouds

Activity -4

Write ‘T’ for true and ‘F’ for false statements in the given boxes. Give supporting statements for each of your answers:

(a) In the morning, the boy asked the first question to his father.

Ans: F

Supporting Statement: His mother was the first he had asked in the morning

(b) The boy’s mother asked him to go to school.

Ans: T

Supporting Statement: Hurry up, now. Wash quickly, eat your breakfast and go to school.”

 (c) When the boy got up in the morning, he saw that the sky was cloudless.

Activity -5

Answer the following questions:

(a) Which question haunted the boy? (কোন প্রশ্নটি ছেলেটিকে তাড়া করেছিল?)

Ans: The Question that haunted the boy was where the clouds had gone.

(b) What did the boy see in the middle of the night?( মাঝরাতে ছেলেটা কি দেখলো?)

Ans: In the middle of the night the boy saw the dense and black clouds gathered in the sky and the flashes of lighting.

(c) How did he feel as he walked between the fields? (মাঠের মাঝে হাঁটতে হাঁটতে তার কেমন লাগছিল?)

Ans: As he walked between the fields he felt that his body was on fire and his throat dry.

(d) What did he do after reaching the shelter of the tree? (গাছের আশ্রয়ে পৌঁছে সে কী করল?)

Ans: After reaching the shelter of the tree he splashed the cool water from the Persian wheel on his dusty feet. Then he washed his hands and face and drank his fill.

Ans: The old man said that he once lived in a place where it hadn’t

rained for ten years.

(b) How did the boy feel as he reached the mud-hut? (মাটির কুঁড়েঘরে পৌঁছে ছেলেটার কেমন যেন লাগলো ?)

Ans: When he reached the mud hut he felt a nip in the air and the earth was damp underfoot.

(c) What did the boy do as he stood under the jamun tree? (ছেলেটি জাম গাছের নিচে দাঁড়িয়ে কী করল?)

Ans: As the boy stood under the jamun tree let the rain drops  fall on his head and face.

(d) Why did the clouds shed rain in the absence of the boy? (ছেলের অবর্তমানে মেঘ কেন বৃষ্টি ঝরালো?)

Ans: The clouds shed rain in the absence of the boy because the natural condition was favourable for rain.

Activity 8 (a)

Underline the verbs that denote actions which will be in progress at a time in the future:

(i)  I shall be reading a book next week.

Ans: shall be reading

(ii) You will be going to school tomorrow.

Ans: will be going

(ii) They will be visiting our house next month.

Ans: will be visiting

The verbs you have underlined are in the Future Continuous Tense.

A Future Continuous is a form of a verb that denotes an action which will be in progress at a time in the future. (তুমি যে ক্রিয়াগুলিকে আন্ডারলাইন করেছ তা Future Continuous Tense-এ রয়েছে। ঘটমান ভবিষ্যত একটি ক্রিয়াপদের একটি রূপ যা একটি ক্রিয়াকে নির্দেশ করে যা ভবিষ্যতে একটি সময়ে ধরে  চলতে থাকবে।)

Underline the verbs that denote actions that will be completed in the future:

(i)  I shall have written the story by then.

(ii) He will have left before you go to see the doctor.

The verbs you have underlined are in the Future Perfect Tense.

A Future Perfect Tense is a form of a verb that denotes an action that will be completed by a certain time in the future. (তুমি যে ক্রিয়াগুলিকে আন্ডারলাইন করেছ তা Future Perfect Tense-এ রয়েছে।

Future Perfect Tense  একটি ক্রিয়াপদের একটি রূপ যা ভবিষ্যতে একটি নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের মধ্যে সম্পন্ন করা হবে এমন একটি ক্রিয়াকে নির্দেশ করে।)

Activity 8-(c)

Read the following sentences. Identify the future continuous tense and future perfect tense and fill in the table given below:

(i)  I shall be playing in the field.

Ans: Future Continuous

(ii) She will have recited the poem.

Ans: Future perfect

(iii) You will have enjoyed the picnic.

Ans: Future perfect

(iv) They will be coming soon.

TWO FRIENDS AND A BEER

Once there lived two friends in a village. One day they went to a fair together. At the time of return they were passing through a forest. Suddenly they a bear coming towards them. Seeing the bear one friend climbed a tree. The other friend did not know how to climb a tree. So he could not climb the tree. He stood helplessly. Suddenly he hit upon a plan. He lay down on the ground like a dead man. The bear came near him. It thought that he was dead. Then the bear went away on its way.

Activity- 10(b)

Suppose you have been waiting for a piece of good news. Write a paragraph in about eighty words on your experience of waiting:

the news you waited for —- what you did while waiting—whether the news  had come —- your feelings.

MY EXPERIENCE OF WAITING

Last December I went to my Uncle’s house in Kolkata. There I participated in an essay competition. I returned home before the result of competition. The first prize was 2 tickets for a trip to Murshidabad. After reaching home I waited eagerly for the result. I was very confident about my writing. Yet I felt a bit nervous. I thought that other participants might do well also. After two weeks the result came at last. I received a letter from the organizers. I heard my heart go thump-thump against my chest. I had become first in the competition. They had also sent two tickets as my prize. I was overwhelmed with joy. I felt it to be the best moment of my life.
