1) About forty years ago I went on a long hike, through   hills absolutely unknown to tourists, in that very old region where the Alps penetrate into Provence.

4) I was crossing this country at its widest part, and after walking for three days, I found myself in the most complete desolation.

5) I  was camped next to an abandoned village.

6) I had used the last of my water the day before and I needed to find  more.

7)  These ruined houses of the village made me think that there must, at one time, have been a spring or a well there.

8) There was indeed  a  spring, but it was dry.

9) All life had disappeared.

10) It was a beautiful   June day with plenty of sun, but on these shelterless lands, high up in the sky,  the  wind  whistled continually.

 = এটা ছিল জুনের সূর্যালোকিত একটি সুন্দর দিন কিন্তু এই আশ্রয়হীন দেশের অনেক উপর দিয়ে বাতাস শীষের মতো আওয়াজ করে বইছিল ।

11)  Its sound was like that of a wild beast disturbed during its meal.

= এর শব্দটা ছিল খাবার সময় একটি বন্য জন্তুর বিরক্ত বোধ করা গর্জনের মতো । (beast-বিস্ট)

12) I had to move my   camp.

13) After five hours of walking, I  still hadn’t  found water, and nothing gave me hope of finding     any.

= পাঁচ ঘন্টা হাঁটার পর আমি জল পেলাম না এবং কিছুই আমাকে জল পাওয়ার আশা দেখাতে পারলো না ।

Part-2

1) Everywhere there was the same dryness, the same stiff, woody plants.

=  সেখানে সর্বত্র একই শুষ্কতা এবং কঠিন খাড়া খাড়া চারা গাছ ছিল । (dryness-ড্রাইনেস, stiff-স্টিফ)

2) I thought I saw in the distance the shadow of a figure.

3) On a chance I headed towards it.

4) It was a shepherd.

   = এটা ( ছায়ামূর্তিটি ) ছিল একজন মেষপালক । (shephered-শেপার্ড্)

5) Thirty lambs or so were resting near him on the scorching ground.

=  ত্রিশ বা তার বেশি ভেড়া ঝলসানো মাটিতে তার কাছে বিশ্রাম নিচ্ছিল । (scorching-স্করচিং)

6) He gave me  a  drink and a little later he led me to his shepherd’s cottage.

= সে আমাকে একটু পানিয় দিল এবং কিছুক্ষণ পর সে আমাকে তার মেষপালকের কুটিরে নিয়ে গেল ।

7) He shared his soup with me.

  =  সে আমার সঙ্গে তার স্যুপ ভাগ করে নিল ।

8) It had been agreed immediately that I would pass the night there, the closest village being  still more than a day and a half farther on.

9) There are four or five villages dispersed far from one another on the flanks of the hills in this area.      (dispersed-ডিসপার্স্ড)

= এই এলাকার পার্বত্য অঞ্চলের আশেপাশে ছড়িয়ে ছিটিয়ে চার-পাঁচটি গ্রাম আছে ।

 10) They are inhabited by woodcutters who make charcoal.

=  সেই গ্রামগুলিতে বাস করে কাঠুরিয়ারা যারা কাঠ-কয়লা বানায় ।

11) The shepherd took out a bag and poured a pile of acorns out onto the table.

= পশুপালক একটি থলি বের করল এবং একগাদা ওকফল টেবিলের ওপর ঢাললো ।

12) He began to examine them one after another with a great deal of attention, separating the good ones from the bad.

13) When he had before him one hundred perfect acorns he stopped, and we went to bed.

14) The company of this man brought me a feeling of peace.

15) He gave me the impression that nothing could disturb him.

= সে আমাকে এই ধারণা দিল যে কোন কিছু থেকে বিব্রত বা বিরক্ত করতে পারেনা । (ইমপ্রেশান)

16) I was intrigued and I wanted to find out more about this man.

= আমি কৌতুহলী হলাম এবং লোকটি সম্পর্কে আরো কিছু জানতে চাইলাম । (intrigued-ইনট্রিগড)

Part-3

1) Before going out the next day, he soaked in a bucket of water the acorns that   he had so carefully chosen and counted.

5) This made a hole in which he placed an acorn, and covered over the hole again.

6) He was   planting oak trees.

   সে করছিল রোপন   ওক  গাছ   = সে ওক গাছ রোপন করছিল ।

7) In this way, he planted his one hundred acorns with great care.

= এইভাবে সে একশো হাজার ওকফল সযত্নে রোপন করেছিল ।

8) He told me that for three years now he had been planting trees in this solitary way.

= সে আমাকে বলল তিন বছর ধরে সে নির্জনে একা একা গাছ লাগিয়ে চলেছে । (solitary-সলিটারি)

9) He had planted one hundred thousand.

   = সে একশ হাজার গাছ লাগিয়েছে ।

10) Of these one hundred thousand, twenty thousand had come up.

= এই এজশ হাজার গাছের মধ্যে কুড়ি হাজার গাছ জন্মেছে ।

11) It was at this moment that I began to wonder about his age.

17) He had retired into this solitude, where he took pleasure in living slowly, with his flock of sheep and his dog.

18) He had concluded that this country was dying for lack of trees.

19) He added that, having nothing more important to do, he had resolved to remedy the situation.

  = সে আরও বলেছিল গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কিছু করার না থাকায় সে স্থির করেছে এই পরিস্থিতি প্রতিকার করবে ।    (resolved-রিসলভড, remedy-রিমেডি, situation-সিচুয়েশান)

20) We parted the next day.

= পরেরদিন আমরা আলাদা হয়ে গেলাম ।  (parted-পারটেড)

21) The next year the war came, in which I  was engaged for five years.

= পরের বছর যুদ্ধ শুরু হয়েছিল যাতে পাঁচ বছরের জন্য নিযুক্ত হয়ে পড়েছিলাম । (emgaged-এনগেজড)

22) With the war behind me, I had a great desire to breathe a little pure air, and I set out again along the trail through that deserted country.

23) The land had not changed.

   = ভূভাগের কোন পরিবর্তন হয়নি ।

24) Ever since the day before, I had been thinking about the shepherd who planted trees.

= আগের দিনগুলোর মতোই লোকটির কথা চিন্তা করছিলাম যে গাছগুলি রোপন করেছিল ।

25) Ten thousand oaks, I had said to myself, must really take up a lot of space.

= আমি নিজের মনে বললাম দশ হাজার ওক গাছ অবশ্যই অনেকটা জায়গা নেবে ।

26) When I met Elzéard Bouffier this time, I found that the war had not disturbed him at all.

= যখন আমার এলজিয়ার বুফিয়ের সঙ্গে দেখা হলো তখন দেখলাম যে যুদ্ধ তাকে একটু বিব্রত করতে পারে নি ।

27) He had continued with his planting.

 = সে তার রোপন কাজ চালিয়ে যাচ্ছে ।

28) The oaks of 1910  were now ten years old and were taller than me and than him.

=  ১৯১০ সালের ওক গাছগুলির বয়স এখন দশ বছর বয়সী আর সেগুলি আমার ও মেষ পালকের চেয়ে লম্বা হয়ে উঠেছিল ।

29) The scene was impressive.

30)  I was actually speechless and we passed the whole day in silence, walking through his forest.

31) When I considered that this had all sprung from the hands and from the soul of this one man  without technical aids — it struck me that men could be as effective as  God in domains other than destruction.
