1) Punctually at midday he opened his bag and spread out his professional equipment, which consisted of a dozen cowrie shells, a square piece of cloth with obscure mystic charts on it, a notebook, and a bundle of palmyra writing.

2) His forehead was resplendent with sacred ash and vermilion, and his eyes sparkled with a sharp, abnormal gleam which was really an outcome of a continual searching look for customers, but which his simple clients took to be a prophetic light and felt comforted.

39)  It will do you good to sit down for a while and chat with me.”

40)  The other grumbled some reply vaguely.

= অন্যজন গজগজ করে কিছু একটা উত্তর দিল।

41) The astrologer pressed his invitation; whereupon the other thrust his palm under his nose, saying, “You call yourself an astrologer?”

= জ্যোতিষী তার নিমন্ত্রণটা জোর করে চাপাতে চাইল; যার ফলে অন্যজন তার হাতের তেলোটা জ্যোতিষীর নাকের নীচে মেলে ধরে বলল, “তুমি নিজেকে একজন জ্যোতিষী বল ? ”

42) The astrologer felt challenged and said, tilting the other’s palm towards the green shaft of light, “Yours is a nature …”

43) “Oh, stop that,” the other said.

47) At this the other withdrew his arm, took out an anna, and flung it out to him, saying, “I have some questions to ask.

48)  If I prove you are bluffing, you must return that anna to me with interest.”

49) “If you find my answers satisfactory, will you give me five rupees?”

50) “No.”

= “না।”

51) “Or will you give me eight annas?”

52) “All right, provided you give me twice as much if you are wrong,” said the stranger.

56) The other sat down, sucking his cheroot, puffing out, sat there ruthlessly.

63) You dragged me in while I was passing.”

64) The astrologer shivered in his grip; and his voice shook and became faint.

= তার দৃঢ়মুষ্ঠির মধ্যে জ্যোতিষী শিউরে ওঠে; আর তার কন্ঠস্বর কেঁপে ওঠে আর ক্ষীণ হয়ে যায়।

76) But will you give me a rupee if what I say is convincing?

84) He bared his chest to show the scar.

=  সে তার ছাতি অনাবৃত করল ক্ষতচিহ্নটা দেখাতে।

85) “What else?”

=“আর কী?”

86) “And then you were pushed into a well nearby in the field.
