1) There was once a   lad who wanted to be a sailor but his mother would not let him go to the sea. 

( lad- ল্যাড, sailor- সেইলর , would- উড,)                                                

= একদা এক বালক ছিল যে নাবিক হতে চেয়েছিল কিন্তু তার মা তাকে সমুদ্রে যেতে দিত না ।।

2) “Child, what do you know of sailing?” she would say. ( child- চাইল্ড , sailing- সেইলিং,)

= তিনি বলতেন, “ বাছা তুমি নৌযাত্রার কি বোঝ ?”

3) “You’re a farmer’s son, you know the turn of the seasons and smell of the soil but you do not know the sea.”

  (turn-টার্ন , seasons- সিজনস, smell- স্মেল, soil- সয়েল )

= তুমি কৃষক / চাষীর ছেলে, তুমি ঋতুদের পরিবর্তন এবং মাটির গন্ধ চেন / জান কিন্তু তুমি সমুদ্রকে জান না ।।

4) Now the boy whose name was Jon, had always obeyed his mother

    (whose-হুস,always-অলওয়েস) 

= ওই ছেলেটি যার নাম ছিল জন সে সবসময় তার মা কী মান্য করে চলত । ( obeyed- ওবেড )

5) So   he went about his farm work with heavy heart but did not again mentioned the sea. 

( went about-ওয়েন্ট অ্যাবাউট,, firm- ফার্ম, heavy- হেভি, heart- হার্ট,  mentioned- মেনশনড )

সমুদ্র = তাই সে বিষন্ন হৃদয়ে তার ক্ষেতের কাজে লেগে পড়ল এবং আর কখনও সমুদ্রের কথা উল্লেখ করল না ।

6) One day, he had been walking behind the plough. 

   = একদিন সে লাঙল চালাচ্ছিল ।। ( walking- ওয়াকিং,  plough-প্লাউ )

7) He all  but  ran over  a  tiny green turtle on   a  clod of dirt.

( tiny-টাইনি-, turtle-টার্টল  clod- ক্লড,  dirt-ডার্ট )

= সে কাদার /মাটির দলার / ঢেলার উপরের একটি ছোট্ট সবুজ কচ্ছপকে মাড়িয়ে ফেলেছিল ।।

8) He picked the turtle  up and set    it  on his head where he knew it would be safe.

= সে কচ্ছপটিকে তুলল এবং তার মাথার উপরে রাখল যেখানে সে জানত এটি নিরাপদে থাকবে ।।

9) when he was done with ploughing, Jon plucked the turtle from his head. 

= যখন সে তার লাঙল করা শেষ করল জন কচ্ছপটিকে তার মাথা থেকে নামিয়ে আনল ।।   (plucked-প্লাকড)

10) To his utter surprise he found that it had turned into a  tiny green fairy man that stood upon his palm and bowed

= অতি বিস্ময়ে সে দেখল যে এটি একটি ছোট্ট সবুজ পরি-মানবে ( রূপকথার-মানুষে ) রূপান্তরিত হয়েছে যে তার হাতের তালুর উপর দাঁড়িয়ে মাথা নীচু করে তাকে অভিবাদন জানাচ্ছে  .( bowed-বাউড,utter-আটার,surprise-সারপ্রাইজ,turned-টার্নড,fairy-ফেয়ারি,palm –পাম)

11) “I  thank  you for your kindness, tell  me your heart’s desire and I’ll grant it to you   for saving my life”, said the fairy.  ( grant-গ্রান্ট, desire-ডিজায়ার, kindness-কাইন্ডনেস )

= আমি তোমার দয়ার জন্য ধন্যবাদ জানাই , তোমার মনের ইচ্ছা প্রকাশ কর এবং আমি তা পূরন করব আমার প্রান রক্ষা করার জন্য ।।

12) Jon bowed back but said nothing.  ( bowed-বাউড )

   = জন প্রতি অভিবাদন জানাল কিন্তু কিছুই বলল না ।

13) Although his heart yearned to go to the sea, he did not express his wish.( yearned-ইয়ানর্ড

= যদিও তার হৃদয় সমুদ্রে যাবার জন্য আনচান করত, কিন্তু সে মুখে কিছুই প্রকাশ করল না ।।  

14) The green fairy man could read a heart easily so he said, ”I  see you wish to go sailing”.

= সবুজ পরি-মানবটি (রূপকথার-মানুষটি) সহজেই মানুষের মনের কথা পড়তে পারত, তাই সে বলল, “ আমি দেখতে পাচ্ছি তুমি সমুদ্রে পাড়ি দিতে চাও” ।।

15) Jon’s face answered for him.   ( answered-আনসারড )                                                

          = জনের মুখ তার হয়ে উত্তর দিয়ে দিল ।।

1) “Since you   put      me       on   your head like   a  hat to keep  me   safe,     I shall give 

   যেহেতু  তুমি রেখেছিলে আমাকে উপর তোমার মাথা  মতো এক টুপি রাখতে  আমাকে নিরাপদ আমি  দেব

you      a  different kind of cap in return, the kind sailors most desire.

তোমাকে এক   আলাদা ধরনের  টুপি   পরিবর্তে    যেরকম  নাবিকেরা সবচেয়ে আকাঙ্কাকরে

=তুমি যেহেতু আমাকে নিরাপদে রাখার জন্য তোমার মাথায় আমাকে টুপির মতো রেখেছিলে, বিনিময়ে আমি তোমাকে একটা অন্য ধরনের টুপি দেব, যে ধরনের টুপি নাবিকেরা সবচেয়ে বেশি আকাঙ্খা করে ।।

2) A  cap full of wind.   

 একটি টুপি  ভর্ত্তি  বাতাস   = বাতাস ভর্ত্তি / পূর্ন একটি টুপি ।।

3) But there’s one warning, no human hand will ever be able to take it off.

   কিন্তু সেখানে একটি  হঁশিয়ারী   না মানুষের   হাত   কখনো  হবেনা সমর্থ  খুলতে এটি

= কিন্তু একটা হুঁশিয়ারী / সতর্কবার্তা , কোন মানুষের হাত টুপিটাকে কখনও খুলতে পারবে না ।।

4) Then with  a  blink, the fairy man disappeared leaving  a  striped  cap behind. ( blink-ব্লিঙ্ক)

   তারপর সাথে এক পলকে     পরি মানবটি  অদৃশ্যহয়েগেল   রেখেগেল এক ডোরাকাটা টুপি পিছনে(di-ডিসঅ্যাপিয়ার্ড)

= তারপর চোখের পলকে একটা ডোরাকাটা–টুপি রেখেদিয়ে পরি–মানবটি (রূপকথার–মানুষটি) অদৃশ্য হয়েগেল ।

5) Young Jon put the cap on his head and ran home to tell his mother. ( young-ইয়ং,)

 ছেলেমানুষ  জন পরল টুপিটি  ওপর তার মাথা এবং দৌড়াল বাড়ি বলতে  তার   মাকে

= অল্পবয়সী জন মাথায় টুপিটি পড়ল আর বাড়ি ছুটল তার মা কে বলার জন্য।।

6) “No good will come of the wind cap”, she said.

    না ভালো  হবে/আসবে থেকে  বাতাসের টুপি  তিনি বললেন

= তিনি বললেন বাতাসের টুপি থেকে ভালো কিছু হবে না ।।

7) But the lad would have none of her cautions.   (caution-কশানস )

  কিন্তু বালকটি    হলনা      কিছুই   তার  সতর্কবার্তা 

= কিন্তু ছেলেটি মায়ের কোন হঁশিয়ারী শুনতে রাজী হল না ।।

8) The very next day, putting on the sailor’s cap, he ran off to the sea.  (putting-পুটিং)

     ঠিক   পরের  দিন     পরে     নাবিকের    টুপি  সে দৌড়াল   সমুদ্রে

= ঠিক পরের দিন নাবিকের টুপি পরে সে সমুদ্রের দিকে ছুটল ।।  

9) On seeing a ship anchored near the shore, he requested the captain to take him

    দেখে একটি জাহাজ নোঙরকরা  কাছে   তীরের    সে অনুরোধকরল  ক্যাপ্টেনকে    নিতে   তাকে

 along.   (anchored-অ্যাংকারড, shore-শোর, requested- রিকুয়েসটেড )

  সাথে  = একটা জাহাজ তীরের কাছে নোঙর ফেলে  দাঁড়িয়ে আছে দেখে, সে ক্যাপ্টেনকে অনুরোধ করল তাকে সঙ্গে নেওয়ার জন্য ।।

10) Thus began his first ever sea voyage!     ( thus- দাস, began- বিগান, voyage- ভয়েজ )

   এইভাবে শুরুহল  তার প্রথম বার  সমুদ্র  যাত্রা   = এইভাবে শুরু হল তার প্রথম সমুদ্র যাত্রা ।।

11) Well, the wind cap worked as   the fairy    had   but that one condition prevailed!

   হল কি  বাতাসের   টুপি কাজকরল যেমন পরি-মানব বলেছিল কিন্তু সেই  একটি   শর্ত     বজায়রইল

= ব্যাপারটা হল কি পরি–মানবটি (রূপকথার–মানুষটি)যেমন টি বলেছিল হাওয়া টুপি (বাতাসের টুপি) তেমনই কাজ করল, কিন্তু একটা শর্ত বজায় থাকল ।। ( worked- ওয়ার্কড, condition- কনডিশান , prevailed–প্রিভেলড  )

12) Now that was both bad and good.

    এখন সেটা  ছিল  দুটোই মন্দ  এবং ভালো 

= এখন শর্তটি ছিল মন্দ আর ভালো – দুটোই ।।

13) It was bad because jon could neither take his cap off before his captain nor at

   এটি ছিল খারাপ কারন   জন  পারত   না    খুলতে তার টুপি   সামনে   তার ক্যাপ্টেন    না 

bedtime.

শোবারসময় = এটি এই কারনে খারাপ ছিল যে জন তার টুপিটি না পারত তার ক্যাপ্টেনের সামনে খুতে , না খুলতে পারত শোবার সময়ে ।।  ( neither-নাইদার, bedtime- বেডটাইম)

14) And it was good because neither could he lose the cap nor could it be stolen from

    এবং এটি ছিল ভালো  কারন     না    পারত  সে হারাতে টুপিটি   না  পারত এটি হতে চুরি   থেকে

him.  ( loose- লুস stolen- স্টোলেন )

তার 

= আর এটি ভালো ছিল কারন, টুপিটি না সে হারিয়ে ফেলতে পারবে, না সেটা তার কাছ থেকে চুরি করা যাবে

15) Since it was wind that sailors called for, and wind that Jon could supply he soon

   যেহেতু এটি ছিল  হাওয়া যেটা নাবিকেরা   চাইত     এবং বাতাস যেটা জন  পারত যোগানদিতে সে শীঘ্রই

became very popular.

 হয়েউঠল  খুব   প্রিয়     = যেহেতু নাবিকদের যা দরকার তা হচ্ছে বাতাস এবং এই বাতাস জন যোগান দিতে পারত, তাই শীঘ্রই সে সকলের কাছে খুব প্রিয় হয়ে উঠল ।।  ( since-সিন্স, called for-  কলড ফর soon-সুন, popular-পপুলার)

16) when he twisted the cap he could summon the east wind and the west wind.

    যখন  সে মোচড়দিত  টুপিটি   সে পারত   ডাকতে   পূবের    বাতাস এবং  পশ্চিমের   বাতাস

=যখন সে টুপিটিকে বাঁকাত সে ডাকতে/হাজির করতে পারত পূবের ওপশ্চিমের বাতাসকে ।(  twisted-টুইসটেডsummon-সামন)

17) He could also turn   it to call both the north wind as well as the south wind.

    সে  পারত  ও ঘোরাতে এটি ডাকতে দুজনকেই  উত্তরের  বাতাস  সাথেসাথে     দক্ষিনের বাতাস

= সে এটিকে ঘুরিয়ে উত্তরের ও দক্ষিনের বাতাসকেও ডাকতে /হাজির করতে পারত ।। (north- নর্থsouth- সাউথ)

18) The captain would therefore never part with his    prized  sailor and let him ashore.

     ক্যাপ্টেন    পারেননি  সেইজন্য    কখনও ছাড়তে সঙ্গে  তার মহামূল্যবান নাবিক এবং দিতে তাকে ডাঙায়

= ক্যাপ্টেন তাই তার মহামূল্যবান নাবিকটিকে কখনও ছাড়েননি আর তাকে ডাঙায়ও ফিরতে দেননি । (prized-প্রাইজড, ashore- অ্যাসোর, therefore- দেয়ারফোর )

19) For a year and  a  day,  young  Jon did not set foot on land.

   জন্য এক বছর এবং এক দিন ছেলেমানুষ জন   রাখেনি     পা   ডাঙায়

= এক বছর আর একদিন হয়ে গিয়েছিল ছেলেমানুষ জন ডাঙায় পা রাখেনি ।।

20) he saw nothing but the churning of the waves.

    সে দেখেনি কিছুই   কিন্তু   প্রচন্ড-আন্দোলন   ঢেউয়ের

21) Soon there grew  in  his heart a strong desire to see the land.

2) He promised he would return but the captain was unmoved                                                    সে  কথাদিল   সে  আসবে  ফিরে   কিন্তু   ক্যাপ্টেন   ছিল   অনড়

3) One quite afternoon, he lay fast asleep and fell to dreaming agin.(quite-কোয়াইট lay-লে)

        এক   শান্ত  বিকালবেলায়  সে শুয়ে গভীর ঘুমিয়ে এবং লাগল  স্বপ্নদেখতে    আবার

4) Unknown to him, the ship stood offshore from his   old   firm. (unknown-আননোন)

     অজান্তে    তার   জাহাজটি   দাঁড়াল  তীরে     থেকে তার পুরানো খামার

=তার অজান্তেই জাহাজটা এসে দাঁড়াল তার খামার থেকে সামান্য দূরেই ।। (offshore-অফসোর )

5) In Jon’s dream the seasons turned  rapidly and as each turned, so did  Jon in his bed.

   জনের    স্বপ্নে     ঋতুগুলি   পরিবর্তিতহল তাড়াতাড়ি এবং  প্রতিটি  পাল্টানো  তেমনকরল জন তার বিছানায়

= জনের স্বপ্নের মধ্যে ঋতুগুলি তাড়াতাড়ি বদলাতে লাগল তার প্রতিটি ঋতু যেভাবে অবর্তিত হতে লাগল জন ও সেই ভাবে তার বিছানায় পাশ ফিরতে লাগল ।। (dream- ড্রিম, seasons-সিজনস,  rapidly- রাপিডলি,turned- টার্নড)

6) Consequently, the cap on his head twisted round and about.

      ফলস্বরূপ      টুপিটি ওপর তার মাথা পাকখেল  চারধারে  এবং চারপাশে

7) It called up  a   squall from the clear    sky  that hit the ship without a warning.

  এটি ডেকেআনল এক দমকাঝড় থেকে পর পরিস্কার আকাশ যে আছড়াল জাহাজে  ছাড়া    সতর্কবার্তা

= এটি পরিস্কার আকাশ থেকে হঠাৎ দমকা ঝড় ডেকে আনল যা কোন সতর্কবার্তা ছাড়াই জাহাজটির উপর আছড়ে পড়ল ।। ( squall- স্কোয়াল, clear- ক্লিয়ার, warinig- ওয়ার্নিং)

8) The wind had been whirning about the boat tearing the sails and snapping the spars.

    বাতাস    বোঁ বোঁ আওয়াজকরে ঘুরল চারপাশে জাহাজের ছিঁড়েফেলল  পাল    এবং মড়মড়করেভাঙল  মাস্তুল

= বাতাস জাহাজটির চারপাশে বোঁ বোঁ করে ঘুরতে লাগল এবং পালগুলি ছিঁড়ে ফেলল এবং মাস্তুলগুলি মড়মড় করে ভেঙে ফেলল ।। ( whirning-হোয়ারলিং tearing- টিয়ারিং  sails- সেলস, snapping- স্ন্যাপিং,  spars– স্পারস )

9) “It’s his fault”, the sailors cried.

   এটি তার দোষ    নাবিকরা  চিৎকারকরল = “এটা ওর দোষ ”, নাবিকরা আর্তনাদ করে উঠল ।।(fault-ফল্ট)

10) They shouted in anger and fear and  tried to    rip      the cap off his head.

    তারা  চিৎকারকরল  রাগে   এবং ভয়ে  এবং চেষ্টাকরল ছিঁড়েবেরকরত টুপিটি খুলতে তার মাথা

12) They pulled it and twisted it and so the squall became a strom, the mightiest they

    তারা  টানল  এটি এবং বেঁকাল  এটি এবং তাই দমকাহাওয়া হয়েগেল  এক ঝড়   সবচেয়েজোরালো   তারা

= তিনি রাগে জনকে তার ডোরাকাটা টুপির প্রান্ত ধরে আঁকড়ে ধরে তিনবার ঘোরালেন এবং সমুদ্রে ছুঁড়ে ফেলেদিলেন ।

15) But the winds called up by the cap spun the ship three times around.

    কিন্তু  বাতাস    ডাকাহয়েছিল দ্বারা টুপিটির ঘোরাল  জাহাজটির   তিনবার    চারপাশে

= কিন্তু টুপির দ্বারা ডেকে আনা বাতাসের ঝাপটায় জাহাজটিকে তিনবার বনবন করে ঘুরিয়ে দিল ।।(spun-স্পান )

16) As Jon went under the waves, the cap came off his head.

  যেই  জন  গেল  তলায়   ঢেউয়ের     টুপিটি   খুলেগেল   তার মাথা

= যেই জন ঢেউয়ের তলায় গিয়ে পড়ল, টুপিটি তার মাথা থেকে খুলে গেল ।। (waves-ওয়েভস)

17) Soon the strom stopped, and Jon swam ashore.

    শীঘ্রই    ঝড়    থেমেগেল   এবং জন  সাঁতরে  তীরেএল

= শীঘ্রই ঝড় থেমে গেল আর জন সাঁতার দিয়ে তীরে এসে উঠল  .( strom-স্ট্রম, stopped-স্টপড, swam-সোয়াম, ashore- অ্যাসোর )

20) Again in the winter, when the snow lay heavy on the fields, he began to dream of 

    আবার   শীতকালে      যখন    তুষার   জমল ভারীহয়ে ওপর  মাঠের  সে শুরুকরল স্বপ্নদেখতে

সমুদ্রের   = আবার শীতকালে, যখন খেতের ওপর ভারী বরফ জমল, সে সমুদ্রের স্বপ্ন দেখতে শুরু করল ।।

21) Jon went to the wardrobe, got out the fairy cap and started at it for a long moment.

    জন  গেল কাছে  আলমারির     বেরকরল     জাদু টুপি  এবং তাকিয়েরইল দিকে ধরে  দীর্ঘ   সময়

= জন আলমারির কাছে গেল , যাদু টুপিটিকে বের করল আর সেটার দিকে তাকিয়ে রইল বেশ কিছুক্ষনের জন্য ।।

    গুঁজেনিয়ে এটি মধ্যে তার জামার সে দৌড়াল  দিকে   মাঠের

= জামার মধ্যে এটিকে গঁজে নিয়ে সে মাঠের দিকে দৌড়াল ।।

 23) He placed the wind cap under a stone where he knew the fairy man would find it.

     সে  রাখল     হাওয়ারটুপি   নীচে  এক পাথর যেখানে  সে  জানত     পরিমানব    পাবে   খুঁজে এটি

= সে হাওয়ার টুপিটিকে একটা পাথরের নীচে রাখল যেখানে সে জানত রূপকথার মানুষ সেটাকে খুঁজে পাবে ।।  

24) Then  he   left again for the seas.

    তারপর সে বেরহল আবার জন্য  সমুদ্রের  = তারপর সে আবার সমুদ্রের জন্য বের হল ।।

25) For the rest of his life, Jon spent half the year on a ship and half on the shore till at

26) From then on he came to be known as Captain Turtle for he was much at home on

     থেকে তারপর   সে   হল   পরিচিত    হিসাবে ক্যাপ্টেন  কচ্ছপ  জন্য সে থাকত যতটা  স্বাচ্ছন্দে

the water as he was on the land.

  জলে    যেমন সে থাকত  ডাঙায়     = সেই থেকে সবাই তাকে চিনত ক্যাপ্টেন কচ্ছপ হিসাবে কারন সে জলে যতটা স্বচ্ছন্দে থাকত ততটাই থাকত ডাঙায় ।।

Ans: I think I would have done the same if I had been in Jon’s position. There is no taste of satisfaction by getting success with the help of others. A little success in one’s own ability certainly gives great pleasure. That is why I must do the same.

 MY SEA VOYAGE

It was last April. I was in a boat on a bright day. The boat was in the middle of the sea. The boat man was taking me to Ghoramara island. There were churning of waves all around. The air was filled with the cry of sea-gulls. A gentle wind was blowing. It was really very exciting. Suddenly the boat rocked in waves. I was felling scared. But in a few moments I overcame the situation. I again started to enjoy the deep blue sea. This was my unforgettable experience of sea voyage.

Activity 10 (b)

Suppose you had wished to perform on stage for a long time. On the occasion of your school’s annual function, you finally got a chance to do so. Write a letter to your friend describing how you felt when your wish was fulfilled.

My dear friend Raja,

                                I have got your letter just now. Thank you very much for your letter. I am glad to know that you are all well. We are also fine.

                                            Today I cannot resist the temptation of sharing my feelings. Last Saturday one of my wishes was fulfilled. I had finally been able to perform on stage. You know that how long I have been waiting for the day I was selected to recite a poem of Nazrul on the day of annual function of the school. My name was announced. I got on the stage and stood before the microphone. My pounding as I looked the black heads before me. As I started reciting the poem the hall became silent. When I finished I could only hear the wild clapping. I felt a great joy I have never felt before.
