1) My father , Harold Dhal, was a Norwegian who came from a small town near Oslo,

called Sarpsborg.

2) His own father, my grandfather, was a fairly prosperous merchant who owned a

store in Sarpsborg and traded in just about everything from cheese to chicken-wire.

3) My father had lost an arm when he was fourteen but had become a successful

shipbroker.

4) A shipbroker is a person who supplies the ship with everything it needs when it

comes into port- fuel and food, ropes and paint, soap and towles, hammer and nails, and

 thousands of other little items.

=একজন  জাহাজের মাল সরবারহকারী হলেন একজন ব্যাক্তি যিনি জাহাজ বন্দরে এলে যেসব জিনিস তার প্রয়োজন যেমন – জ্বালানী ও খাদ্য , রশি ও রঙ, সাবান ও তোয়ালে , হাতুড়ি ও পেরেক এবং আরও ছোটকাটো হাজারো মালপত্র সরবারহ করে থাকেন  ( supplies- সাপ্লাইস, port- পোর্ট, fuel- ফুয়েল, হ্যামার, নেইল )

5) A shipbroker is a kind of enormous shopkeeper for ships and by far the most

important item he supplies to them is the fuel on which the ship’s engine run- in those

days, only coal.

6) He set up a shipbroking farm at Cardiff of South Wales.

7) My father met my mother, Sofie Magdalene Hesselberg during the summer of 1911

 and were married soon after.

8) In 1918, When I was two, we all moved into an imposing country mansion beside the

village of Radyr, about eight miles north of Cardiff.

9) I remember it as a mighty house with turrets on its roof and with majestic lawns and

terraces all around it.

10) There were many acres farm and woodland, and a number of cottages for the staff.

11) Very soon , the meadows  were full of milking cows and sties were full of pigs and

chicken-run was full of chickens.

=  খুব শীঘ‌্রই তৃনভূমিগুলি পূর্ন হতো দুধালো গরুতে এবং শূকোরের থকার জায়গা পূর্ন হতো শূকোরে, আর মুরগীর খামার পূর্ন হতো মুরগীতে । ( meadows-মিডৌস )

12) There were several horses for pulling the ploughs  and the hay-wagons, and there

was a ploughman and a cowman and a couple of gardeners  and all manner of servants

in the house itself. 

=   সেখানে লাঙল টানার জন্য খড় টানার গাড়ি জন্য অনেক ঘোড়া, এবং  একজন লাঙল করার লোক, একজন রাখাল, কয়েকজন মালি ও সমস্ত রকমের চাকর-বাকর ঐ বাড়িতে ছিল । (plough-প্লাউ, wagons-ওয়াগনস,)

(Unit-2)

1) In 1920, when I was still only three, my mother’s eldest child, my own sister Astri,

died from appendicitis.

=   ১৯২০ সালে যখন আমার বয়স কেবল মাত্র তিন বছর , আমার মায়ের জ্যেষ্ঠ / সর্বপ্রথম সন্তান, আমার নিজের দিদি অ্যাস্ট্রি অ্যাপেনডিসাইটিস রোগে মারা যায় ।

2) She was seven years old when she died.

=   সে যখন মারা য়ায় তার বয়স ছিল সাত ।

3) Astri was far and away my father’s favourite.

=   অ্যাস্ট্রি ছিল আমার বাবার অত্যন্ত প্রিয় ।

4) He  adored    her beyond measure and has her sudden death left him literally

speechless for days afterwards.

5) He was so overwhelmed with grief that when he himself went down with pneumonia

a month or so afterwards, he did not much care whether he lived or died.

=   তিনি শোকে এতটা বিহ্বল হয়ে পড়েছিলেন যে একমাস বা তার কিছু সময় পরে যখন নিউমোনিয়ায় তার মৃত্যু হল, তখন তিনি বাঁচেন কি মরেন এব্যাপারে তিনি কোনো পরোয়া করেন নি । ( overwhelmed- ওভারহোয়েমড, grief-গ্রিফ )

6) If they had penicillin those days , neither appendicitis nor pneumonia would have

been so much of a threat, but with no penicillin or any other magical antibiotic cures,

pneumonia in particular was a very dangerous disease indeed.

=    যদি তখনকার দিনে পেনিসিলিন থাকত, অ্যাপেনডিসাইটিস বা নিউমোনিয়া কোনটাই এত আতঙ্কজনক হোতো না, কিন্তু পেনিসিলিন বা অন্য কোন অলৌকিক ঔষধ না তাকায়, বিশেষত নিউমোনিয়া তখন সত্যিসত্যিই মারাত্মক অসুখ ছিল ।

7) The patient had to fight to survive. (survive-সারভাইভ)

=   রোগিকে টিকে /বেঁচে থাকার জন্য লরাই করতে হোতো ।

8) My father refused to fight.

  =   আআমার বাবা লড়াই করতে অস্বীকার করেছিলেন । ( refused-রিফিউসড)

9) He was thinking , I am quite sure, of his beloved daughter, and he was wanting to join

her in heaven.

=   আমি নিশ্চিত তিনি তার প্রিয় মেয়ের কথা ভাবছিলেন, আর স্বর্গে তার সঙ্গে মিলিত হতে চাইছিলেন । ( বিলাভেড, হেভেন)

10) So he died.                    11) He was fifty-seven years old.

=   তাই তিনি মারা গেলেন ।                          = তার তখন বয়স সাতান্ন বছর ।

12) My mother had now lost a daughter and a husband all in the space of a few weeks.

=   আমার মা এখন কয়েক সপ্তাহের ব্যাবধানে একটি মেয়ে এবং স্বামীকে হারিয়ে ছিলেন ।

13) Here she was, suddenly having to face all alone the very gravest problems and

responsibilities.

14) She had five children to look after.

=   তার পাঁচটি সন্তানের প্রতিপালন বা দেখাশোনা করার ছিল । 

15) She sold the big house and moved to a smaller one a few miles away in Landaff .

=   তিনি বড়ো বাড়িটি বিক্রি করে দিলেন এবং কয়েক মাইল দূরের ল্যানডাফের একটি অপেক্ষাকৃত ছোট বাড়িতে চলেগেলেন ।

16) It was called Cumberland Lodge and was nothing more than a pleasant medium-

sized suburban villa.

17) So it was in Landaff two years later, when I was six years old, that I went to my first

school.

(Unit-3)

1) The school was a kindergarten run by two sisters, Mrs Corfield and Miss Tucker, and

it was called the Elmtree House.

2) It is astonishing how little one remembers about one’s life before the age of seven or

eight.

6) I do have  a blurred memory of sitting on the stairs and trying over and over gain to

tie one of my shoelaces, but that is all that comes back to me at this distance of the

school itself.

7) On the other hand, I can remember very clearly the journey I made to and from the

 school because they were so tremendously exciting.

8) Great excitement is probably the only thing that really interests a six-year-old boy

and it sticks in his mind.

=   প্রচন্ড উত্তেজনা সম্ভবত একমাত্র জিনিস  যা একটি ছয়-বছরের বালকের মনে সত্যিকারের আগ্রহ সৃষ্টি করতে পারে, এবং সেটি তার মনে থেকে যায় । (, ইনটারেসট, স্টিকস )

9) In my case, the excitement centered around my new tricycle.

=   আমার ক্ষেত্রে এই উত্তেজনা ছিল আমার নতুন তিন-চাকার সাইকেল কে  কেন্দ্র করে ।

10) I rode to school on it everyday with my eldest sister riding on hers.

=   আমি প্রতিদিন এটি চড়ে বিদ্যলয়ে যেতাম আমার দিদির সঙ্গে , সে তার টা চড়ে যেত ।

11) No grown-ups came with us, and I can remember oh so vividly how the two of us

used to go racing at enormous sped down the middle of the road and then most

glorious of all when we came to a corner, we would lean to one side and take it on two

wheels.

=   বড়োরা কেউ আমাদের সঙ্গে যেতনা, আর আমি নিখুঁত বাবে মনে করতে পারি কেমন করে আমরা দুজন দুর্দান্ত গতিতে রাস্তার মাঝখান দিয়ে যেতাম আর তার চেয়ে যেটা সবচেয়ে গৌরবের তা হল, আমরা যখন কোন মোড়ের কাছে আসতাম তকন একদিকে কাত হয়ে দু-চাকার উপর চলতাম । ( ভিভিডলি, গ্লোরিয়াস )

12) All this , you must realize, was in the good old days when the sight of a motor car on

the street was an event, and it was quite safe for tiny children to go tricycling and

whooping their way to school in the centre of the highway.

=   এইসব তোমরা বুঝতে পারছ ঘটতো পুরানো সুখের দিনের যখন রাস্তায় মোটর গাড়ির দেখা মেলা ছিল একটি ঘটনা, আর তিন-চাকার সাইকেল, নিয়ে বড়ো রাস্তায় মাঝখানে দিয়ে হৈ হৈ করতে করতে স্কুলে যাওয়টা ছোটো শিশুদের কাছে সম্পূর্ন নিরাপদ ছিল ।

13) So much, then, for my memories of kindergarten sixty-two years ago.

=   এই সবকিছু ছিল তাহলে বাষট্টি বছর আগের আমার কিন্ডারগার্ডেন স্কুলে যাওয়ার স্মৃতি ।

14) It’s not much, but it’s all there is left.
