Unit- I

1) Long, long ago, in the beautiful island of Sicily, there lived a goddess called Ceres.

= অনেক অনেক দিন আগে সুন্দর সিসিলি দ্বীপে সেরেস নামে একজন দেবী বাস করতেন ।

2) She was the goddess of crops, plants and trees; so on her depended the health and happiness of all the people of this wide world.

= তিনি ছিলেন শস্য ও লতাপাতার দেবী তাই পৃথিবীর সমস্ত মানুষের স্বাস্থ্য ও সুখ তার ওপরেই নির্ভর করত ।(Goddess-গডেস, depended- ডিপেন্ডেড)

3) Ceres had a fair daughter, Proserpine, whom she loved more than her life.

= সেরেসের প্রসারপাইন নামে এক সুন্দরী কন্যা ছিল যাকে তিনি তাঁর নিজের জীবনের থেকেও বেশি ভালোবাসতেন । (fair-ফেয়ার)

4) Proserpine was the brightest and loveliest of all girls.

= প্রসারপাইন মেয়েদের মধ্যে সুন্দরতম এবং উজ্জ্বলতম ছিল । ( brightest-ব্রাইটেস্ট,  loveliest-লাভলিয়েস্ট)

5) Her cheeks were rosy and beautiful like the apple blossoms in spring.

= তার গালদুটি ছিল গোলাপি এবং বসন্তের আপেল ফুলের মতো সুন্দর । (cheeks-চিকস, blossoms-ব্লোসমস)

6) Her eyes were as blue as the sky in April.

= তার চোখ দুটি ছিল এপ্রিল মাসের আকাশের মত নীল ।

7) Her long golden curls were as bright as the sunlight in springtime.

= তার লম্বা সোনালী কোকড়ানো চুলের গোছা ছিল বসন্তের সূর্যালোকের / সূর্যকিরণের মত ।(curls-কার্ল্স)

8) All the radiant loveliness of springtime seemed to have taken the form of this fair maiden.

= বসন্তের সমস্ত উজ্জ্বল সৌন্দর্য উচ্চ যেন মনে হতো এই সুন্দরী কুমারীর রূপ ধারণ করেছিল ।

9) Everybody said, “She is the Spring.”

=  সবাই বলত, “সেই হলো আসলে বসন্ত” ।

10) Proserpine helped her mother in the fields.

= প্রসারপাইন তার মাকে মাঠের কাজে সাহায্য করত ।

11) With her young companions she danced and sang, while gathering flowers.

= সে তার অল্পবয়সী সঙ্গীদের সাথে নাচতো ও গান গাইতো ফুল তোলার সময় ।(companion- কম্পেনিয়ন , gathering-গ্যাদারিং)

12) Far down the earth, there lived dark Pluto, king of the land of the dead.

= পৃথিবীর অনেক নিচে অন্ধকারময় পৃথিবীর মৃত্যুর দেশের রাজা প্লুটো বাস করত ।

13) He had often asked some goddess to come and live with him, but no goddess was willing to live among the dead.

= তিনি প্রায়শই কিছু দেবীকে তার রাজ্যে আসতে ও বাস করতে বলত, কিন্তু কোন দেবীর মৃতদের মাঝে বাস করতে রাজি ছিল না ।(often-অফেন, willing-উইলিং)

14) So Pluto was very lonely.

= তাই প্লুটো খুব নিঃসঙ্গ ছিল । (lonely-লোনলি)

15) One day Pluto came to earth and was driving along in his swift chariot.      

= একদিন প্লুটো পৃথিবীতে এসেছিল এবং তা দ্রুত গামী রথ চালাচ্ছিল । (swift-সুইফট, Chariot-চ্যারিয়ট)              

16) Behind some bushes he heard voices and laughter.

=  একটা ঝোপের পিছনে সে কিছু কণ্ঠস্বর এবং হাসি শুনেছিল । (bushes-বুশেস, laughter-লাফটার)

17)  He was curious.

= সে কৌতূহলি হয়ে উঠেছিল । (curious-কিউরিয়াস)

18) He stopped his chariot, and walked to the bushes.

= সে তার রথ থামিয়েছিল এবং ঝোপের দিকে হেঁটে গিয়েছিল ।

19) There he saw Proserpine laughing and playing with her companions who formed a circle round her.

= সেখানে সে দেখেছিল প্রসারপাইন তার সঙ্গীদের সাথে হাসছে এবং খেলছে যারা তাকে ঘিরে একটি বৃত্ত তৈরি করেছিল । (formed-ফর্ম্ড, circle-সারকেল)

20) Pluto was charmed at the sight of the lovely maiden.

= সেই সুন্দরী কুমারির কে দেখে প্লুটো মুগ্ধ হয়েছিল ।  (charmed-চার্ম্ড)

21) He looked at Proserpine and thought, ”I must make her my queen.

= সে  প্রসারপাইনের দিকে তাকিয়েছিল এবং ভেবেছিল, “আমি অবশ্যই তাকে আমার রানী বানাবো” ।

22) Her bright face will make even my dark kingdom look bright and beautiful.”

= তার উজ্জ্বল মুখ আমার অন্ধকার রাজ্যকে সুন্দর ও উজ্জ্বল করে তুলবে । (kingdom-কিংডম)

23) But he knew that it would be useless to ask the maiden to be his queen.

= কিন্তু সে জানতো যে কুমারিটিকে তার রানী হতে বলাটা/ জিজ্ঞাসা করাটা অর্থহীন হবে । (ইউসলেস)

24) So he stepped into the circle and carried her to his chariot.

=  তাই সে বৃত্তের মধ্যে প্রবেশ করল এবং তাকে তার রথে নিয়ে গেল ।  (stepped-স্টেপড, carried-ক্যারিড)

25) The companions of Proserpine were frightened and fled in all directions.

=  প্রসারপাইনের বন্ধুরা আতঙ্কিত হলো এবং বিভিন্ন দিকে ছুটে পালিয়ে গেল । (frightened-ফ্রাইটেনড)

26) Pluto departed with the captive maiden in his chariot.

=প্লুটো বন্দি মেয়েটিকে তার রথে নিয়ে পালিয়ে গেল  ।    (departed-ডিপার্টেড, captive-ক্যাপটিভ)

27) He drove very fast.

=  সে খুব দ্রুত চালাতে লাগলো ।

28) He was afraid that Proserpine’s mother Ceres would soon appear there in search of her daughter.

=  সে ভয় পাচ্ছিল যে প্রসারপাইনের মা সেরেস খুব শীঘ্রই সেখানে তার মেয়ের খোঁজে উপস্থিত হতে পারে ।

29) After some time Pluto came to the bank of a river.

= কিছু সময় পরে প্লুটো একটি নদীর তীরে এল ।

30) The river was full to the brim and he could not drive through the water.

=নদীটি কানায় কানায় পূর্ণ ছিল এবং সে জলের মধ্যে দিয়ে রথ চালাতে পারছিল না । (brim-ব্রিম)

31) To go in another direction would mean loss of time.

= অন্যদিকে যাওয়া মানে সময় নষ্ট করা / সময়ের অপচয় । (direction-ডায়রেকশান)

32) So with his scepter he struck the ground.

= তাই সে তার রাজদন্ড দিয়ে মাটিতে আঘাত করলো ।  (scepter-সেপ্টার,  struck-স্ট্রাক)

33) The ground opened at once, and chariot, horses and all plunged into the darkness

below.

= সঙ্গে সঙ্গে মাটি দু-ফাঁক হয়ে গেল এবং রথ ঘোড়া আর সমস্ত কিছু নিচের অন্ধকারের মধ্যে ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়ল । (plunged-প্ল্যাংড)

34) Just as the ground was closing over her, Proserpine seized her girdle and threw it far out into the river.

= ঠিক যখন তার মাথার উপরে মাটি বন্ধ হয়ে যাচ্ছিল প্রসারপাইন তার কোমর বন্ধনী আঁকড়ে ধরল এবং বাইরে দূরে নদীর মধ্যে ছুঁড়ে দিল । (griddle-গ্রিডেল)

35) She thought that the girdle might reach Ceres, and her mother would be able to

trace her lost daughter.

= সে ভেবেছিল কোমরবন্ধনীর সেরেসের কাছে পৌঁছতে পারে এবং তার মা সেই দেখে হারানো মেয়ের খোঁজ সন্ধান পেতে পারে ।  (trace-ট্রেস)

Unit II

1) In the evening Ceres came back home.

= সন্ধ্যাবেলা সেরেস বাড়ি ফিরে এল ।

2) She did not find her daughter who usually came running to meet her.

= সে তার মেয়েকে খুঁজে পেল না যে সাধারণত তার সঙ্গে দেখা করতে দৌড়ে আসতো ।(usually-ইউজুয়ালি)

3) This had never happened before.

= এরকম এর আগে কখনো ঘটেনি ।

4)  Ceres was greatly surprised and a little worried.

= সেরেস ভীষণ অবাক ও একটু চিন্তিত হল । (surprised-সারপ্রাইসড worried-ওরিড)

5) She searched for her in all the rooms, but they were all empty.

= সে সমস্ত ঘরে তাকে খুঁজলো কিন্তু সব ফাঁকা ছিল ।  (searched-সারচড,  empty-এম্পটি)

6) Then she lighted a torch from the fires of a volcano and wandered about the fields and valleys looking for Proserpine.

= তখন সে আগ্নেয়গিরির আগুন থেকে একটি মশাল জ্বালালো এবং মাঠ-ঘাট উপত্যকায় প্রসারপাইনকে খুঁজে বেড়াতে লাগলো ।  (lighted-লাইটেড, volcano-ভলক্যানো, wandered-ওয়ানডার্ড্)

7) The search went on for the whole night, and in the morning her grief knew no bounds.

=  সারারাত ধরে খোঁজা চলল এবং সকালে তার দুঃখের সীমা রইল না । (grief-গ্রিফ)

8) That very day Ceres began a long journey.

= সেইদিনই সেরেস একটা দীর্ঘ যাত্রা শুরু করলো ।

9) She wandered over land and sea, over hills and valleys for days together.

= সে দিনের পর দিন স্থলভাগ, সমুদ্র, পাহাড়, উপত্যাকায় উদ্দেশ্যহীন ভাবে ঘুরে বেড়াতে লাগল ।

10) She neglected all her work on earth.

= পৃথিবীতে তার সমস্ত কাজ উপেক্ষা করলো ।   (neglected-নেগলেকটেড)

11) As a result the crops failed everywhere.

= ফলস্বরূপ চারিদিকে ফসলের উৎপাদন খারাপ হলো ।

12) The ground became dry and barren.

= জমির মাটি শুষ্ক ও বন্ধ্যা হয়ে গেল । (barren-ব্যারেন)

13) Famine broke out all over the world.

= সারা পৃথিবী জুড়ে দুর্ভিক্ষ ছড়িয়ে পড়ল । (ফ্যেমাইন)

14) It seemed that the earth grieved with the grieving mother.

= এটা মনে হল যে পৃথিবী শোকার্ত মায়ের সঙ্গে পৃথিবীও শোকার্ত হয়ে গেছে । (grieved-গ্রিভড)

15) The people were starving.

= লোকেরা অনাহারে ছিল ।  (starving-স্টারভিং)

16) They came to Ceres and implored her to bring back plenty, and save their lives.

= তারা সেরেসর কাছে এলো মিনতি করতে লাগল প্রাচুর্য ফিরিয়ে দিতে এবং তাদের জীবন রক্ষা করতে ।

(implored-ইমপ্লোরড, plenty-প্লেন্টি)

17) Ceres lifted her sad face, weary with ceaseless wandering, and said, “I cannot take care of the earth until I get back my lost daughter.”

= সেরেস তার অবিরাম ঘোরাঘুরি ফলে ক্লান্ত দুঃখিত মুখ তুলল এবং বলল, “যতক্ষণ না আমি আমার হারানো মেয়েকে ফিরে পাব আমি পৃথিবীর যত্ন নিতে পারব না” । (ceaseless-সিসলেস, wandering-ওয়ান্ডারিং)

18) So the people thought of praying to Jupiter who was the king of the gods.

= তাই লোকেরা ঠিক করল জুপিটার এর কাছে প্রার্থনা করবে যে ছিল দেবতাদের রাজা ।

19)  And to Jupiter they sent their prayer to bring Proserpine back to her mother.

= তারা জুপিটার এর কাছে প্রার্থনা জানায় তার প্রসারপাইনকে মায়ের কাছে ফিরিয়ে দেওয়ার জন্য ।

20) They were sadly in need of Ceres’s help.

= তাদের ভীষণভাবে সেরেসের সাহায্য দরকার ছিল ।

21) Ceres wandered all over the earth and came at last to Sicily.

= সেরেস সারা পৃথিবী ঘুরে বেড়িয়ে অবশেষে সিসিলিতে ফিরে এলো ।

22) One day when she was passing by a river, waves carried something to her feet.

= একদিন যখন সে নদীর পাশ দিয়ে যাচ্ছিল নদীর ঢেউ কোন একটা জিনিসকে তার পায়ের কাছে এনে ফেলল । (carried-ক্যারিড, waves-ওয়েভস)

23) She picked up the object and saw that it was the girdle of her daughter.

= সে জিনিসটা তুলে দেখল যে সেটা তার মেয়ের কোমরবন্ধ । (griddle-গ্রিডল)

24) Ceres looked at it carefully again and again.

=  সেরেস বারবার এটিকে খুঁটিয়ে দেখল ।

25) Tears filled her eyes and streamed down her pale cheeks.

= তার চোখ অশ্রুতে পূর্ণ্ হল এবং অশ্রু ধারা তার ফ্যাকাশে গাল দিয়ে নামতে লাগল ।

26) She suddenly seemed to hear a voice coming from a nearby fountain.

= তার হঠাৎ মনে হল সে শুনল কাছের এক ঝরণা থেকে একটি কণ্ঠস্বর আসছে । (fountain-ফাউন্টেন)       

27) The voice grew clearer every moment and it said, “Ceres, great mother of the earth, I am the nymph of the fountain.

= কণ্ঠস্বর টি প্রতিমুহূর্তে আরো পরিষ্কার হচ্ছিল এবং সেটি তাকে বলল, “সেরেস, পৃথিবীর মহান মা, আমি হলাম এই ঝর্ণার পরি” । (nymph- নিম্ফ)

28) I live in the dark depths of the earth.

= আমি পৃথিবীর গভীর অন্ধকারে বাস করি ।

29) And I have seen your daughter on a throne in the kingdom of Pluto.

= আমি আপনার মেয়েকে প্লুটোর রাজত্বে সিংহাসনের উপর দেখেছি । (throne-থ্রোন)

30) Her cheeks were pale and her eyes were heavy with weeping.

= তার গালগুলো বিবর্ণ ছিল এবং চোখদুটি কান্নায় ভারী হয়ে গিয়েছিল । (pale-পেল)

31) Go to Jupiter and pray to him to send her back to you.

=জুপিটারের কাছে যান এবং তার কাছে প্রার্থনা করুন আপনার মেয়েকে আপনার কাছে ফিরিয়ে দেবার জন্য

32) Do not grieve any more.

= আর বেশি দুঃখ কাতর হবেন না ।  (grieve-গ্রিভ)

33) ”With these words the nymph seemed to leap towards the sun and the sky.

= এই কথাগুলি বলেই যেন মনে হলো পরিটি সূর্য এবং আকাশের দিকে লাফ দিয়ে গেল । (leap-লিপ)

34) Ceres now came to see Jupiter and said, “I have found the place where my daughter is.

আছে   = সেরেস এখন জুপিটার এর সাথে দেখা করতে এলো এবং বলল, “আমি সেই জায়গা খুঁজে পেয়েছি যেখানে আমার মেয়ে আছে” ।

35) Please give her back to me and I shall once more make the earth as fruitful and green as it was.”

= “দয়া করে আমাকে আমার মেয়েকে আমার কাছে ফিরিয়ে দিন এবং আমি আরো একবার পৃথিবী কে উর্বরা ও সবুজ করে তুলবো যেমনটি আগে ছিল” ।(fruitful- ফ্রুটফুল)

36) Jupiter was deeply moved by the mother’s sorrow, and also by the prayers of the people on the earth.

= জুপিটার মায়ের এই দুঃখে এবং পৃথিবীর মানুষের প্রার্থনায় গভীরভাবে বিচলিত হয়েছিলেন  ।

37) He thought for a while and said, “Proserpine may return to earth if she has not tasted any food in Pluto’s kingdom.”

= তিনি কিছুক্ষণ ভাবলেন এবং বললেন, “প্রসারপাইন পৃথিবীতে ফিরে আসতে পারে যদি সে প্লুটোর রাজত্বে কোন খাবার না খেয়ে থাকে” ।

38) Ceres quickly descended into the land of the dead.

= সেরেস দ্রুত মৃতদের দেশে নেমে পড়লেন ।  ( descended-ডিসেনডেড)

39) But alas! That very day Proserpine had eaten six pomegranate seeds, and for every one of those seeds she was destined each year to spend a month in the realm of the dead.

= কিন্তু হায় সেই দিনই প্রসারপাইন ছয়টি ডালিমের দানা খেয়ে ফেলেছিল এবং প্রত্যেক দানার জন্য তাকে প্রতি বছর একমাস করে মৃতদের রাজ্যে কাটাতে হবে বলে নির্ধারিত হয় । (pomegranate- পোমিগ্রানেটস, destined-ডেস্টিনড, realm-রেলম)

40) So for six month every year Proserpine would come back to her mother.

= তাই প্রত্যেক বছর ছমাসের জন্য প্রসারপাইন তার মায়ের কাছে ফিরে আসত ।

41)  When she did so, flowers bloomed, birds sang and the earth smiled to welcome the young queen.

=  যখন সে আসতো তখন ফুল ফুটত, পাখিরা গান করত এবং পৃথিবী তরুণী রাণীকে স্বাগত জানাতে ।   (bloomed-ব্লুমড)

42) But when the time came for Proserpine to rejoin Pluto in his dark underground kingdom, Ceres would begin to grieve for six months.

= কিন্তু যখন প্রসারপাইনের ওই অন্ধকার মাটির নিচে প্লুটোর রাজ্যে যাবার সময় আসতো তিনি ছয় মাস ধরে দুঃখ করতে শুরু করতেন ।

43) The earth too, would look sad and gloomy.

= পৃথিবীকেও তখন দুঃখী ও বিষন্ন দেখাতো  ।  (gloomy-গ্লুমি)

44) The trees would shed their leaves.

= গাছের পাতা ঝরিয়ে ফেলত ।

45) The flowers, too, would hide underground, until they heard again the gentle footfall of Proserpine returning to earth.

= ফুলেরাও মাটির নিচে লুকিয়ে পড়ত যতক্ষণ না পর্যন্ত তারা আবার প্রসারপাইনের পৃথিবীতে ফিরে আসার কোমল পদধ্বনি শুনতে পেত । (footfall-ফুটফল)
