1) It was seven o’clock of a very warm evening in the Seeonee hills.

      = এটি ছিল  সিওনি পাহাড়ের এক উষ্ঞ সন্ধ্যাবেলা ।

2) Father wolf woke up from his day’s rest.

 = বাবা নেকড়ে তার সারাদিনের বিশ্রাম থেকে জেগে উঠল ।  

3) He scratched himself, yawned, and spread out his paws one after the other to get rid

of the sleepy feeling in their tips.

  ( scratched-স্ক্রাচড, yawned-ইয়নড, spread-স্প্রেড, paws-পস, স্লিপি)

= সে নিজেকে আঁচড়ালো, হাই তুলল, এবং একের পর এক তার থাবাগুলি ছড়াল সেগুলির ডগা / প্রান্তগুলি থেকে ঘুমভাব ছাড়াবার জন্য ।

4) Mother wolf lay with her big grey nose dropped across her four tumbling, squealing

cubs.

= মা নেকড়ে তার বিশাল ধূসর নাক নিয়ে তার চারটি গড়াগড়ি খাওয়া , চিৎকার করতে থাকা শিশুর কাছে শুয়ে ছিল ।

5) The moon shone into the mouth of the cave where they all lived.

= তারা সবাই যে উহায় থাকত তার মুখের কাছে চাঁদের আলো এসে পড়েছিল ।

6) “Augrrh!” said father wolf .

         আউগরর     বলল    বাবা     নেকড়ে  = বাবা নেকড়েটি বলল, “ আউগররর” ।

7) “It is time to hunt again”.

 = “ আবার শিকারের সময় হয়েছে ” ।

8) He was going to spring down hill when a little shadows with a bushy tail crossed the threshold and whined.

 = সে পাহাড় থেকে লাফিয়ে যাবে এমন সময় এক ঘন লোমশ ল্যাজযুক্ত একটি ছোট্ট ছায়া দোরগোড়ার /চৌকাঠের কাছদিয়ে চলে গেল এবং অসন্তোষ প্রকাশ করল ।

9) “Good luck goes with you, O chief of the wolves.

= নেকড়েদের প্রধান, সৌভাগ্য তোমার সঙ্গে থাকুক ।

10) And your noble children may never forget the hungry in this world.

= এবং তোমার ওই মহান শিশুরা যেন এই পৃথিবীর ক্ষুধর্তদের কখনও না ভুলে যায় ।

11) It was the jackal, Tabaqui.

= এটা ছিল খ্যাঁকশেয়াল তাবাকুই ।

12) The wolves of India despise Tabaqui because he runs about making mischief and

telling tales, and  eating rags and pieces of leather from the village rubbish-heaps.

= ভারতবর্ষের নেকড়েরা তাবাকুইকে ঘৃনা করে কারন সে ঘুরে বেড়ায় দুষ্টুমি করে, গল্প করে , এবং গ্রামের জঞ্জালের স্তুপ থেকে ছেঁড়া কাপড় ও চামড়ার টুকরো খায় ।

13) But they are afraid of him too because Tabaqui, more than anyone else in the jungle

is apt to go mad.

= কিন্তু তারা আবার তাকে ভয়ও পায় কারন জঙ্গলের যে কোন পশুর তুলনায় তাবাকুই এর পাগল হওয়ার প্রবনতা বেশি  ।

14) “Enter, then, and look,” said Father Wolf     stiffly, “but there is no food here”.

 = “ভিতরে এসো, তাহলে, দেখো, “ বাবা নেকড়ে কঠিন ভাবে বলল, “এখানে কোন কাবার নেই ” । ( stiffly- স্টিফলি )

15) “For a wolf, no,” said Tabaqui, “but for so mean a person as myself a dry bone is a

good feast.

= “ একটা নেকড়ের জন্য হয়তো নেই ”, তাবাকুই বলল, “ কিন্তু আমার মতো এমন এক নীচ ব্যক্তির ( প্রানীর) জন্য  একটা শুকনো হাড়ই বেশ ভালো ভোজ/ ভোজন ।    ( mean-মিন, bone—বোন, feast-ফিস্ট, )

16) Who are we to pick and choose?’

= “ খাবার বেছে নেওয়ার আমরা কারা ? ” ( pick-পিক, choose-চুস )

17) He scuttled to the back of the cave, where he found the bone of a buck with some

 meat on it.

= সে দ্রুত পায়ে গুহার পিছন দিকে গেল যেকানে সে হরিনের একটা হাড় দেখতে পেল যাতে কিছুটা মাংস লেগে আছে । (স্কাটলড, বাক )

18) He sat cracking the end merrily.

    = সে বসে আনন্দ সহকারে প্রান্তটি কড়মড়িয়ে চেবালো । (ক্রাকিং, মেরিলি)

19) “All thanks for this good meal”, he said, licking his lips.

        (licking- লিকিং )

= সে ঠোঁট চাটতে চাটতে বলল, “ ভালো ভোজনের জন্য তোমাদের সকলকে  ধন্যবাদ ” ।

20) “How beautiful are the noble children!

               কত      সুন্দর       হয়       মহান        শিশুরা       =” তোমার মহান সন্তানরা কি / কতই না  সুন্দর !”

21) How large are their eyes!

             কত     বড়ো  হয়    তাদের চোখগুলি = তাদের চোখগুলি কি বড়ো বড়ো !   (large-লার্জ )

22) And so young too!

    = এবং বেশ ছোটও / অল্প;বয়স্কও ” ।

23) Now, Tabaqui knew as well as anyone else that there is nothing so unlucky as to

compliment children on their faces.

   ( unlucky-আনলাকি, compliment- কমপ্লিমেন্ট )

= আসলে তাবাকুই অন্য যেকোন ব্যক্তির মতোই জানত যে বাচ্চাদের মুখের সামনে তাদের প্রশংসা করার চেয়ে অমঙ্গলজনক আর কিছু হয় না ।

24) It pleased him to see Mother and Father Wolf look uncomfortable. 

= বাবা ও মা নেকড়ে কে অস্বস্তিতে দেখে সে সন্তুষ্ট হল  ।  ( pleased-প্লিসড,  uncomfortable- আনকমফর্টেবেল )

25) Tabaqui sat still, rejoicing in the mischief that he had made, and then he said

spitefully: “Sher Khan, the Big One, has shifted his hunting grounds.

= তাবাকুই চুপকরে বসেছিল, যে দুষ্টুমি সে করেছিল সেটা উপভোগ করছিল, এবং তারপর সে বিদ্বেষ ভরে বলল, “  বিশাল শেরখান, তার শিকারের ক্ষেত্র বদল করেছে ।“    ( rejoicing- রিজয়েসিং, mischief- মিসচিফ, spiefully- স্পাইটফুলি, shifted-শিফটেড, haunting-হান্টিং

26) He will hunt among these hills for next moon, so he has told me”.

= সে আমাকে বলেছে , সে পরের শুক্লপক্ষ /  চান্দ্রমাস ধরে এই পাহাড়ে শিকার করবে ।

27) Sher Khan was the tiger who lived near the Waingunga River, twenty miles away.

 = শেরখান ছিল একটি বাঘ যে কুড়ি মাইল দূরে ওয়েনগুঙগা নদীর কাছে বাস করত ।।

28) “He has no right!” Father began angrily.

    = বাবা নেকড়ে রাগে বলে উঠলো “তার কোন অধিকার নেই”

29) “By the Law of the Jungle he has no right to change his quarters without due

warning.

( quarters -কোয়াটারস,  warning- ওয়ারনিং )

 =  জঙ্গলের আইন অনুসারে তার ক্ষেত্র পরিবর্তনে কোন অধিকার নেই আগে থেকে না জানিয়ে ।

30) He will frighten all game within ten miles, and I I have to kill      for two, these days.”

= সে দশ মাইলের মধ্যে সব পশু পাখিদের ভয় পাইয়ে দেবে আর আমায় এখন দুজনের জন্য শিকার করতে হয় । ( ফ্রাইটেন)

31) “I go,” said Tabaqui quickly.

        = তাবাকুই তাড়াতাড়ি বলল,  ‘আমি চলি’ ।

32) “You can hear Sher Khan below in the thickets.”

= তুমি নিচে ঝোপের কাছে সেখানে ডাক শুনতে পাচ্ছ ।               ( thickets-থিকেটস,  )

33) Father Wolf listened, and below in the valley that ran down to the river he heard

the dry, angry, snarly whine of a tiger.

               ( listened-লিসেনড,  snarly-স্ন্যারলি , whine-হোয়াইন)

= আর নিচের দিকে যে উপত্যকাটি নদীর দিকে নেমে গেছে সে দিক থেকে শুনতে পেল ক্রুদ্ধ শুষ্ক গম্ভীর বাঘের গর্জন  ।

34) “The fool!” said Father Wolf.

       = বাবা নেকড়ে বলল, ‘মূর্খ’ ।

35) “To begin a night’s work with that noise!

= এই আওয়াজ বা গর্জন দিয়ে সে রাতের কাজ শুরু করেছে ।

36)Does he think that our    bucks are like his fat Waingunga bullocks?”

= সে কি মনে করে এখানকার হরিণগুলো তার ওয়েনগুঙ্গার মোটা বলদ গুলোর মত মোটা ?

37) “H’sh. It is neither bullock nor buck he hunts tonight,” said Mother Wolf.

= মা নেকড়ে বলল, “চুপ । আজ রাতে সে না শিকার করবে বলদ না হরিন” ।

38) “It   is   a man.”

         = এটা একটা মানুষ ।

39) “Man!” said Father Wolf, showing all    his white teeth.

= বাবা নেকড়ে তার সবকটি সাদা দাঁত বের করে বলল,  ‘মানুষ’ ।

40) “Faugh! Are there not enough beetles and frogs in the tanks that he must eat man

and on our ground too?”

( Faugh-ফাঃ,  beetels-বিটেলস,)

= দূর! সেখানে জলাশয় কি ব্যাঙ আর গুবরে পোকা কম পড়েছে যে সে আমাদের এলাকায় এসে মানুষ শিকার করবে ?

Unit-2

1) Father Wolf ran out a few paces and heard Sher Khan muttering and mumbling

  savagely as he tumbled about in the scrub.

= বাবা নেকড়ে কয়েকটা দৌড়ে গেল এবং শুনতে পেল শেরখান ক্রুদ্ধস্বরে অস্পষ্টভাবে বিড়বিড় করে কি বলছে যে সময় সে ঝোপের  মধ্যে গড়িয়ে গেল ।

 ( muttering-মাটারিং,  mumbling-মাম্বলিং, savagely- স্যাভেজলি, tumbled- টাম্বেলড , scrub-স্ক্রাব)

2) “The fool has had no more sense than to jump at a woodcutter’s campfire, and he

has burnt his feet,” said Father Wolf with a grunt.

 ( campfire-ক্যাম্পফায়ার,  burnt-বার্নট, grunt-গ্রান্ট)

= বাবা নেকড়ে ঘোঁতঘোঁতকরে  বলল বোকাটা বুদ্ধি কাঠুরের জালানো খোলা আগুনে লাফিয়ে পড়ে হয়তো পা পুড়িয়েছে ।

3) “Something is coming uphill,” said Mother Wolf, twitching one ear.

= “ কিছু একটা পাহাড়ের পাহাড় বেয়ে উপরে উঠে আসছে মা নেকড়ে  কান খাড়া করে বলল । ( twitching-টুইচিং,  )

4) The bushes rustled a little, and Father Wolf got ready to leap.

  = ঝোপগুলো একটু খচমচ করে উঠলো এবং বাবা নেকড়ে লাফানোর জন্য প্রস্তুত হল । ( rustled-রাস্টেলড,  )

5) Then, if you had been watching, you would have seen the most wonderful thing in

the world.

= যদি তুমি ভালো করে তখন লক্ষ্য করতে তাহলে তুমি এই পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে আশ্চর্যজনক/ বিস্ময়কর জিনিস দেখতে পেতে ।

6) “Man!” he snapped. “A  man’s cub! Look!”

= “মানুষ”, সে রাগিস্বরে বলে উঠলো ,  “একটা মানুষের বাচ্চা দেখো” । ( snapped-স্যানপড,  )

7) Directly in front of him, holding on by a low branch, stood a brown baby who could

just walk.

= সরাসরি একেবারে তার সামনে গাছের একটা নিচু ডাল ধরে একটি বাদামী রঙের বাচ্চা দাঁড়িয়ে যে সবেমাত্র হাঁটতে শিখেছে ।

8) He looked up into Father Wolf’s face, and laughed.

= সে বাবা নেকড়ের মুখের দিকে তাকালো এবং হাসলো ।

9) “Is that a     man’s cub?” said Mother Wolf.

= মা নেকড়ে বলল, “এটা কি একটা মানুষের বাচ্চা?”

10) “I have never seen one.

= আমি কখনো এমন দেখিনি ।

11)  Bring it here.”

= ওটাকে এখানে আনো ।

12) “I have heard now and again of such a thing, but never in our pack or in my time,”

said Father Wolf.

= “ আমি এইধরনের জিনিসের কথা অনেকবার শুনেছি কিন্তু আমাদের দলে বা আমাদের সময়ে এরকম কখনো দেখিনি ”, বাবা নেকড়ে বলল ।

13) “He is altogether without hair!”

= তার গায়ে একেবারে লোম নেই । ( altogether-অলটোগেদার,  )

14) The moonlight was blocked out of the mouth of the cave, for Sher Khan’s great

square head and shoulders were thrust into the entrance.

= গুহার মুখে চাঁদের আলো পুরোপুরি আটকে গেল কারণ শের খান তার বিশাল চৌকো মাথা এবং কাঁধ নিয়ে প্রবেশ পথের মধ্যে ঢুকিয়ে দিয়েছিল ।  ( blocked-ব্লকড,  square-স্কয়ার, shoulder-শোলডার, thrust-থ্রাস্ট, entrance-এনট্রান্স)

15)  “What does Sher Khan need?” said Father Wolf.

= বাবা নেকড়ে বলল,  “ শেরখান কি চায়?”

16) “A    man’s cub went this way.

= একটা মানুষের বাচ্চা এই পথেই গেছে ।

18)  Its parents have run off,” demanded Sher Khan.

= শেরখান দাবি করল তার বাবা মা দৌড়ে পালিয়েছে ।    ( demanded-ডিমানডেড,  )

19) “The wolves are free people,” said Father Wolf.

= বাবা নেকড়ে বলল, “নেকড়েরা স্বাধীন প্রাণী” ।

20) “They take orders from the head of the pack, and not any from striped animal.

=  তারা কেবল দলের প্রধানের আদেশ মেনে চলে অন্য কোন ডোরাকাটা প্রাণীর নয় ।   ( stripped-স্ট্রাইপড,)

21) The man’s cub is ours.”

=  মানুষের বাচ্চাটা আমাদের ।

22) The tiger’s roar filled the cave with thunder.

=  বাঘের গর্জনে গুহার ভিতরে বজ্রপাতের মত কেঁপে উঠলো ।      ( roar-রোর,  thunder-থান্ডার,)

23) Mother Wolf     shook herself clear off the cubs and sprang forward.

= মা নেকড়ে নিজেকে ঝাঁকিয়ে তার সন্তানদের থেকে মুক্ত করে লাফিয়ে সামনের দিকে এগিয়ে এলো ।

24) Her eyes were like two green moons in the darkness, facing the blazing eyes of the

tiger.

  = তার চোখ দুটো যেন সবুজ চাঁদের মতো জ্বলজ্বল করছিল এবং সে বাঘের জ্বলন্ত চোখে চোখ রেখে মুখোমুখি দাঁড়ালো ।

25) Sher Khan might have faced Father Wolf, but he could not stand up against Mother

Wolf.

= শেরখান হয়তো বাবা নেকড়ের মোকাবিলা করতে পারত বিরুদ্ধে রুখে দাঁড়াতে পারত কিন্তু মানিকের বিরুদ্ধে রুখে দাঁড়াতে পারল না ।

26) He knew that where she stood she had all the advantage of the ground, and would

fight   to death.

= সে জানত যে যেখানে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে সেই জায়গাটার সমস্ত সুবিধা পাবে এবং মৃত্যু পর্যন্ত লড়াই চালিয়ে যাবে ।     ( adventage-অ্যাডভানটেজ,  )

 27) So he backed out of the cave mouth, growling.

= তাই সে গর্জন করতে করতে গুহার মুখ থেকে পিছু হটল ।   ( growling-গ্রাউলিং)

28) Sher Khan speaks this much truth,” said Father Wolf.

= বাবা নেকড়ে বলল শেরখান এইটুকু অন্তত সত্যি বলেছেন ।

29) “The cub must be shown to the pack.

=  এই বাচ্চাটিকে অবশ্যই আমাদের দলের কাছে দেখাতে হবে ।

30) Will you still keep him?”

= তুমি কি এখনো তাকে রাখবে ?

31) “Assuredly I will keep him,” said Mother Wolf.

= মা নেকড়ে বলল , “আমি অবশ্যই রাখবো”

32) “Lie still little frog.

=  ছোট্ট ব্যাঙ চুপ করে শুয়ে থাকো ।

33) O you, Mowgli for Mowgli, the Frog, I will call you.

= ও মোগলি, আমি তোমায় মোগলি, ছোট ব্যাঙ এই নামেই ডাকবো ।

34) The time will come when you will hunt Sher Khan as  he has hunted you.”

= এক সময় আসবে যখন তুমি শের খানের শিকার করবে, যেমনটা আজ সে তোমার অনুসন্ধান করছে ।

35) Akela, the great grey lone wolf, who led all the pack by strength and cunning, lay

out at full length on his rock.

= আকেলা নামের বিশাল ধূসর নেকড়ে পুরো দলকে তার চতুর বুদ্ধি এবং শক্তি দিয়ে চালায় সে পাথরের উপর নিজেকে পুরস্কৃত করে শুয়ে ছিল ।  ( strength-স্ট্রেন্থ,  cunning-কানিং, length-লেন্থ)

36) “Who speaks for this cub?” said Akela.

=  আকেলা বলল, “বাচ্চাটির হয়ে কে কথা বলবে?”

37)  “Among the free people who speaks”?

= স্বাধীন ব্যক্তিদের মধ্যে কে কথা বলবে ?

38) There was no answer.

=  কোন উত্তর এলো না ।

39) Mother Wolf got ready for what she knew would be her last fight if things came

to fighting.

= যদি লড়াইয়ের পরিস্থিতি তৈরি হয় তাহলে এটাই হয়তো তার শেষ লড়াই হবে, এই ভেবে মা নেকড়ে প্রস্তুত হচ্ছিল ।

40) Then the only other creature, who is allowed at the Pack Council, was Baloo the

bear.

=  তখন একমাত্র প্রাণী যাকে দলের প্রধানের মধ্যে রাখা হয়েছিল সেই ভালু, এক ভল্লুক ।

( creature-ক্রিয়েচার,  allowed-অ্যালাউড,)

41) He rose upon his head and grunted: “I speak for the man’s cub.

= সে মাথা তুলে উঠে দাঁড়ালো এবং ঘ্যোঁতঘ্যোঁত করে বলল, “আমি মানুষের বাচ্চাটার হয়ে কথা বলছি” । ( grunted-গ্রান্টেড)

42)  Let him run with the pack, and be entered with the others.

= তাকে দলের সঙ্গে থাকতে দেয়া হোক এবং এই দলের অন্যান্যদের সাথে চলতে দাও ।  ( entered-এনটারড,)

43) I myself will teach him.”

= আমি নিজে তাকে শিক্ষা দেবেো ।

44) “We need yet another,” said Akela.

= আকেলা বলল,  “আমাদের আরো একজনের দরকার” ।

45) ”Baloo has spoken, and he is    our   teacher for the young cubs.

= ভালু বলেছে এবং সে হচ্ছে আমাদের শাবকদের শিক্ষক ।

46) Who speaks beside Baloo?”

=  ভালু ছাড়া আর কে বলবে ?

47) A black shadow dropped down into the circle.

= একটি কালো ছায়া বৃত্তের মধ্যে এসে পড়ল ।

48) It was Bagheera, the Black Panther.

= এটা ছিল বাঘিরা, কালো চিতা । ( Panther-প্যান্থার)

49) Everyone knew Bagheera and nobody dared to cross his path, for he was as

cunning as a jackal, as bold as the buffalo and as reckless as a wounded elephant.

= প্রত্যেকে বাঘিরা কে চিনত এবং কেউ তার পথে আসতে সাহস করতো না, কারণ সে ছিল শেয়ালের মতো ধূর্ত, মহিষের মত সাহসী এবং আহত হাতির মতো বেপরোয়া । ( dared–ডেয়ারড,  cunning-কানিং, reckless-রেকলেস)

50) But he had a voice as  soft as wild honey dripping from a tree.

= কিন্তু তার গলার স্বর ছিল গাছ থেকে ফোঁটা ফোঁটা ঝরে পড়া মধুর মত সুমিষ্ট ।

51) “To kill a little cub is shame.

= একটি শিশুকে হত্যা করা লজ্জার ।

52) Besides, he may make better sport for you when he is grown.

= তাছাড়া ও যখন বড় হবে তখন সে তোমাদের জন্য আরো ভালো শিকার হতে পারবে ।

53) Baloo has spoken on his behalf,” said Bagheera.

= বাঘিরা বলল, “ভালু ওর পক্ষে কথা বলেছে” ।

54) “Men and their cubs are very wise.

= মানুষ এবং তার বাচ্চারা খুব বুদ্ধিমান ।

55) He may be a help in time,” said Akela.

= “প্রয়োজনে সে  সাহায্য করতে পারে”, আকেলা বলল ।

56) “Truly, a help in time of need; for none can hope to lead the pack forever,” said

Bagheera.

 = বাঘিরা বলল, “ঠিকই প্রয়োজনের সময় সাহায্য করার দরকার কারণ কেউই দলকে চিরকাল চিরকাল নেতৃত্ব দেওয়ার আশা করতে পারি না” ।

57) “Take him away,” Akela said to Father Wolf, “and train him as befits one of the free

people.”

= “ওকে নিয়ে যাও” , বাবা নেকড়ে কে আকেলা বলল , “এবং স্বাধীন মানুষদের উপযুক্ত করে তাকে প্রশিক্ষণ দাও” ।

58) And that is how Mowgli was entered into the Seeonee wolf pack.

= এবং এই ভাবেই মোগলি সিওনি নেকড়ে দলে প্রবেশ করল ।
