Unit I

1) On Friday, June 12th,  I  woke up at six o’clock and no wonder, it    was  my birthday.

= শুক্রবার 12 ই জুন তারিখে আমি সকাল 6 টায় ঘুম থেকে উঠেছিলাম এবং আশ্চর্য হওয়ার মতো কিছু কারণ নেই দিনটা ছিল আমার জন্মদিন । (woke up-ঔক, wonder-ওয়ান্ডার)

2) But of course I was not allowed to get up at that hour, so I had to control

My  curiosity until a quarter to seven.

= কিন্তু অবশ্যই আমাকে ওই সময় উঠতে দেয়া হলো না আর তাই আমাকে আমার কৌতুহল দমন করে রাখতে হলো পৌনে সাতটা পর্যন্ত ।

3) Then I could bear it no longer, and went to the dining room, where I

 received a warm  welcome from Moortje (the cat).

= তারপর আমি সহ্য করতে আর পারলাম না এবং সোজা গেলাম খাবার ঘরে যেখানে আমি মোরতোজের (বিড়ালের কাছ থেকে) উষ্ণ অভ্যর্থনা পেয়েছিলাম ।

4) Soon after seven I went to Mummy and Daddy and then to the sitting room

undo   my presents.

= সাতটা বাজার ঠিক পরেই আমি মা ও বাবার কাছে গিয়েছিলাম এবং সেখান থেকে বসার ঘরে গেলাম আমার উপহার গুলি খুলে দেখার জন্য ।

5) The first to greet me was you, possibly the nicest of  all.

= আমাকে প্রথম যে স্বাগত জানাল সে হল তুমি, সম্ভবত সবার চেয়ে সুন্দর । (possibly-পসিবলি)

6) Then on the table there were a bunch of roses, a plant and some peonies, and more

arrived during the day.

= তারপর টেবিলের ওপরে ছিল এক গুচ্ছ গোলাপ, একটি চারা গাছ, কিছু পিওনিজ গাছ এবং সারাদিনে আরও এসেছিল  ।

7) I got masses of things from Mommy and Daddy, and was thoroughly spoiled

by various friends.

= আমি মা ও বাবার থেকে প্রচুর জিনিস পেয়েছিলাম এবং বিভিন্ন বন্ধুদের কাছ থেকে প্রচুর / অনেক প্রশ্রয় পেয়েছিলাম ।   (masses-ম্যাসেস, thoroughly-থরোলি, spoiled-স্পয়েল্ড, various-ভেরিয়াস)

8)  Among other things I was   given Camera Obscura, a party game, lots of sweets,

chocolates, a puzzle, a brooch, Tales and Legends of the Netherlands by Joseph Cohen,

Daisy’s Mountain Holiday (a terrific book), and some money.

9) Now I can buy The Myths of Greece and Rome -grand!

= এখন আমি কিনতে পারি ‘দ্যা মিথস অফ গ্রীস এন্ড রোম’ ,দারুন / অসাধারণ!

10) Then Lies  called for me and we went to school.

= তারপর আমাকে ডাকলো এবং আমরা বিদ্যালয় গেলাম ।

11) During recess I treated  everyone to sweet biscuits, and then  we

had to go back to our lessons.

= বিরতির সময় আমি প্রত্যেককে মিষ্টি এবং বিস্কুট দিয়ে মনোরঞ্জন করলাম এবং তারপর আবার আমাদের পড়াশোনা শুরু করলাম ।   (treated-ট্রিটেড)

12) Now I must stop.

= এবার আমাকে অবশ্যই থাকতে হবে ।

13) Bye-bye, we’re going to be great pals!

= বিদায়! আমরা খুব দারুণ বন্ধু হতে যাচ্ছি !   (pals-পলস)

Unit II

Monday, 15 June, 1942

1) I  had my birthday  party on Sunday afternoon.

= রবিবার বিকেলে আমার জন্মদিনের অনুষ্ঠান ছিল ।

2)We  showed  a  film The Lighthouse Keeper, which my school friends thoroughly

enjoyed.

= আমরা ‘লাইট হাউজ কিপার’ নামের একটি ছবি দেখেছিলাম যেটা আমার বিদ্যালয়ের বন্ধুরা সম্পূর্ণভাবে / পরিপূর্ণভাবে উপভোগ করেছিল ।

 3) We had a lovely time.

= আমরা খুব চমৎকার / দারুন সময় কাটিয়ে ছিলাম ।

4) There were lots of girls and boys.

= সেখানে অনেক ছেলে মেয়েরা ছিল ।

5) For years Lies Goosens and Sanne Houtman have been my best friends.

= দীর্ঘদিন ধরে লাইস গুসেনস এবং স্যানি হাউটমান আমার সবচেয়ে ভালো বন্ধু ছিল ।

6) Since then I’ve got to know  Jopie de Waal at the Jewish Secondary School.

= তখন থেকেই আমি ইহুদি মাধ্যমিক বিদ্যালয়ের জোপি দডে ওয়াল কে জানতে পেরেছি ।

7) We are    together a lot and she is now my best friend.

 = আমরা একসঙ্গে অনেকটা সময় কাটাই এবং সে এখন আমার শ্রেষ্ঠ বন্ধু ।

8) Lies is more friendly with another girl, and Sanne goes to a different school, where she

has made new friends.

= লাইসের অন্য একটি মেয়ের বেশি ভালো বন্ধু হয়েছে এবং স্যানে অন্য একটি বিদ্যালয় যায় যেখানে তার অনেক নতুন বন্ধু হয়েছে ।

Unit III

1) I haven’t written for a few days because I wanted  first of all to think about my

diary.

= আমি কিছুদিন ধরে কিছুই লিখিনি কারন আমি আমার ডায়েরি সম্বন্ধে প্রথমে কিছু ভাবতে চেয়েছিলাম ।

2) It’s an  odd idea for someone like me to keep a diary; not only because I have never done

so before, but because it seems  to  me that neither I  nor for that matter anyone else

will be interested in the unbosomings of a thirteen-year-old school girl.

= আমার মতো একজনের পক্ষে এটা অদ্ভুত ধারণা এই দিনলিপি লেখার চিন্তা শুধু এই কারণে নয় যে এর আগে আমি এটা কখনো করিনি বরং এই কারনে যে আমার মনে হয় না আমি বা অন্য কোন ব্যক্তি একটি তেরো বছরের বিদ্যালয়ে পড়া মেয়ের অনুভূতি প্রকাশে আগ্রহী উৎসাহী হবে ।

3) Still, what does that matter?

= তো তাতে কি এসে যায়?

4) I want to write, but more than that, I want to bring out all kinds of things that

lie buried deep in my heart.

= আমি লিখতে চাই তার চেয়েও বড় কথা আমি আমার অন্তরের গভীরে যা কিছু চাপা পড়ে রয়েছে সেসব কিছুকে বাইরে আনতে চাই ।  (buried-বেরিড)

5) There is a saying that “paper is more patient than man” , it came back to me on one of

my slightly melancholy days, while I sat chin in hand, feeling too bored and

limp even to make up my mind whether to go out or stay at home.

= কথায় আছে যে কাগজ মানুষের চেয়ে বেশি ধৈর্যশীল, এটি (ডাইরিটি) আমার কাছে এসেছিল খানিকটা

বিষাদের বেদনাদায়ক দিনে, যেদিন আমি আমার চিবুকে হাত রেখে বসেছিলাম অত্যন্ত বিরক্তি ও দুর্বলতা অনুভব করছিলাম , এটা ঠিক করতে যে বাইরে যাব না বাড়ীতেই থাকবো ।

(patient-পেশেন্ট, slightly-স্লাইটলি, melancholy –মেলানক্যালি, bored- রোরড, chin-চিন )

6) Yes, there is no doubt that paper is patient and I don’t intend to show this cardboard-

covered notebook, bearing the proud name of “diary” to anyone.

= হ্যাঁ, এটা ঠিক যে কাগজ বেশি সহনশীল এবং আমি কাউকে ‘ডাইরি’ এই গর্বিত নামের কার্ডবোর্ডের বাঁধানো খাতাটি কাউকে দেখাতে ইচ্ছুক নই / চাইনা ।  (doubt-ডাউট, intend-ইনটেন্ড)

7)  Unless I find a real friend, boy or girl, probably nobody cares.

= আমি যতদিন না একজন প্রকৃত বন্ধু ছেলে বা মেয়ে কাউকে খুঁজে না পাই কেউ এটা খেয়াল করবে না ।

8) And now I come to the root of the matter, the reason for my starting a diary.

= এবং এখন আমি বিষয়বস্তুর মূলে আসি,  আমার দিনলিপি শুরু করার কারণ কি ।

9) It is  that I have no such real friend.

= এর প্রকৃত কারণ হল আমার কোন প্রকৃত বন্ধু নেই ।

10) Let me put it clearly, since no one would believe that  a girl of thirteen feels

herself quite  alone in the world, nor is it  so.

= আমি পরিষ্কার করে বলি যেহেতু কেউ এটা বিশ্বাস করবে না যে তেরো বছরের একটি মেয়ে পৃথিবীতে নিঃসঙ্গ বোধ করে এবং ব্যাপারটা এরকম নয় তা সে নয় ।

11)  I have darling parents and a sister of sixteen.

= আমার প্রিয় বাবা মা আছে এবং ষোলো বছরের একটি দিদি আছে ।

12)   I know about thirty people whom one might call friends.

= এমন তিরিশ জন লোককে আমি চিনি জানি যাদের বন্ধু বলা যায় ।

13) I have relations— aunts and uncles, who are darlings too, a    good home, no – I don’t

seem to lack anything.

= আমার অনেক আত্মীয়-স্বজন আছে কাকা কাকিমা , এরাও খুব প্রিয় ,একটি সুন্দর বাড়ি আছে আমার মনে হয় না কোন কিছুর আর আমার অভাব আছে ।

14)  But it’s the same with all my friends,  just   fun and joking, nothing more.

= কিন্তু এতো আমার সব বন্ধুদের মতোই ,ব্যাপারটা শুধু মজা হাসি-ঠাট্টা ছাড়া আর বেশি কিছু নয় ।

15)  I can never bring myself to talk of anything outside the common round.

=  সাধারণ বৃত্তের বাইরে / ঘেরাটোপের কোনো কিছুর বিষয়ে আমি বলতে পারি না ।

16) We don’t seem to be able to get any closer, that  is the root of the trouble.

= আমাদের মনে হয় আমরা নিজেদের কাছাকাছি আসতে পারিনা , আর এটাই সব সমস্যার মূল ।

17) Perhaps I lack confidence, but anyway, there it is, a stubborn fact and I don’t  

seem to be able to do anything about it.

= আমার হয়তো আত্মবিশ্বাসের অভাব আছে কিন্তু যাইহোক এটা কঠিন সত্য এবং এ ব্যাপারে কোন কিছু করতে পারবে বলে আমার মনে হয় না ।

18) Hence, this diary.

= সেই কারণেই দিনলিপি ।

19) In order to enhance in my mind’s eye the picture of the friend for whom I have

waited so long, I don’t want to set down a series of bald facts in a diary like

Most people do, but I want   this  diary   itself to be my friend, and I shall call

my friend Kitty.

= যে বন্ধুর জন্য আমি এতদিন অপেক্ষা করেছিলাম তার ছবি আমার মনশ্চক্ষে উজ্জ্বল করে তুলতে , অন্যান্য বেশিরভাগ লোক যা করে তাদের মতো একসারি সাধারণ কোনো ঘটনা আমি এই দিন লিপিতে লিপিবদ্ধ করতে চাই না ; আমি এই দিনলিপিটিকে আমার বন্ধু হিসেবে পেতে চাই এবং আমার বন্ধুকে আমি ‘কিটি’ বলে ডাকবো । (enhance- ইনহ্যানস, series-সিরিজ, bald -ব্ল্যাড )

20) No one will grasp what I’m talking about if I begin  my letters to Kitty  just

out of the blue, so, albeit unwillingly, I will sit by sketching in brief the story of my life.

= কেউ ধরতে পারবে না আমি কি বলছি, যদি আমি আমার চিঠি গুলি অপ্রত্যাশিতভাবে কিটিকে লেখা শুরু করি ; তাই যদি অনিচ্ছুক ভাবে আমি শুরু করব আমার জীবনের গল্পের এক সংক্ষিপ্ত বিবরণ দিয়ে ।

21) My father was thirty-six when he married my mother, who was then twenty- five.

= আমার বাবার বয়স ছত্রিশ ছিল যখন তিনি আমার মাকে বিবাহ করেছিলেন এবং তখন মায়ের বয়স ছিল পঁচিশ বছর ।

22) My sister was born in 1926 in Frankfort-on-Main, I followed on June 12, 1929, and we

emigrated to Holland in 1933, where my father was appointed Managing Director of Travies

N.V.

= আমার দিদি হাজার 1926 সালে ফ্রাঙ্কফোর্ট্ –অন-মেইন শহরে জন্মগ্রহণ করেছিল; আমি তার পরে 1929 সালের 12 ই জুন জন্মাই এবং আমরা হাজার 1933 সালে দেশান্তরিত হয়ে যাই হল্যান্ডে , যেখানে আমার বাবা এনভি কোম্পানিতে ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক পদে নিযুক্ত হয়েছিলেন ,।

23) The rest of our family, however, felt the full impact of Hitler’s anti-Jewish

laws,  so life was filled with anxiety.

= আমাদের পরিবারের অন্যান্য অবশ্য হিটলারের ইহুদি বিরোধী আইন এর পুরো প্রভাব ভোগ করেছিলেন, তাই তাদের জীবন ছিল উদ্বেগে ভরা । (jewish- জুইশ, anxiety-অ্যাংজাইটি)

24)  In 1938 my two uncles (my mother’s brothers) escaped to the U.S.A.

= 1938 সালে আমার দুই মামা (আমার মায়ের ভাইয়েরা) আমেরিকায় পালিয়েছিল ।(escaped-এসকেপড)

25) My old grandmother came  to  us,  she was then seventy- three.

= আমার বৃদ্ধা দিদিমা আমাদের কাছে চলে এসেছিলেন তখন তার বয়স তিয়াত্তর বছর ছিল ।

26) Granny died in January 1942, no one    will ever know how much she is present in my

thoughts and how much I love her still.

= 1942 সালের জানুয়ারিতে দিদিমা মারা যান, কেউ কোনোদিন জানবেনা আমার চিন্তা ভাবনায় তিনি কতখানি বর্তমান এবং আমি তাকে এখনও কতটা ভালোবাসি ।

27) In 19341  I  went to school at the Montessori Kindergarten and continued there.

= 1934 সালে আমি কিন্ডারগার্টেনে ভর্তি হই এবং সেখানে আমার পড়াশোনা চালিয়ে যাই ।

28) It was at the end of the school year, I  was in form 6B, when I had to say good-bye to

Mrs. K.

= স্কুলের শেষ বছরের শেষে আমি যখন 6B শ্রেণীতে তখন আমাকে মিসেস কে কে বিদায় জানাতে হলো ।

29) We  both wept,  it was very sad.

=আমরা দুজনেই কেঁদেছিলাম এটা খুব দুঃখজনক ছিল ।

30) In 1941 I went, with my sister Margot, to the Jewish Secondary School, she

in to the fourth form and I into the first.

= 1941 সালে আমি আমার দিদি মার্গ্টের সঙ্গে ইহুদিদের জন্য নির্দিষ্ট মাধ্যমিক বিদ্যালয় গেলাম সেখানে সে ছিল চতুর্থ মানে আমি ছিলাম প্রথম মানে ।

31) So far everything is all right with the four of us and here I come to the present day.

= এখনও পর্যন্ত আমাদের চারজনের সঙ্গে সবকিছু ঠিকঠাক ছিল এবার আমি বর্তমানে কথায় আসি ।
