Exercise 2

Answer the following questions within twenty-five words:

Ans: The wind haunted the second ship like a beast to anchor it in captivity.

(b) Give any two points of difference between the journey of the third ship and the other two

ships. (তৃতীয় জাহাজ এবং অন্য দুটির যাত্রার মধ্যে যে কোনো দুটি  পার্থক্য দেখাও.?)

Ans: The third ship was the only ship that was rigged for a long journey. On the other hand the other ships came back home but the third ship continued its journey.

Grammar in use:

Exercise 3

Replace the underlined words with suitable phrasal verbs given in the list below. Change the form if necessary. There are two extra phrasal verbs:

Exercise 4

Do as directed:

(a) The man was so weak that he could not walk. (rewrite using ‘too’)

Ans:  The man was too weak to walk.

(b) Titir is one of the most intelligent girls in the class. (rewrite using the positive degree of

the underlined adjective )

Ans:  Very few girls in the class are as intelligent as Titir.

(c) As soon as he reached home, it started raining heavily. (change into a negative sentence)

Ans:  No sooner had he reached home than it started raining heavily.

(d) Why cry over spilt milk? (change into an assertive sentence)

Ans:  It is useless to cry over spilt milk.

(e) Blood is thicker than water. (change into an interrogative sentence) 73

Ans:  Isn’t blood thicker than water?

(f)  He told a lie intentionally. (rewrite using the noun form of‘intentionally’)

Ans:  He told a lie with an intention.

(g) Run fast or you will be late. ( change into a complex sentence)

Ans:  If you do not run fast, you will be late.

(h) The reporter made the news public. (rewrite using the verb form of‘public’)

Ans:  The reporter published the news.

Composition:

Exercise 5

Write a newspaper report within 100 words on the effect of a devastating flood in your district based on the following hints:

Midnapore district—month of July — heavy rainfall — rivers overflowing—trees uprooted, many villages flooded— loss of human and animal life—rescue operations—steps taken by the government

DEVASTATING FLOOD  IN MIDNAPORE

                                                                  -By a staff Reporter

Nandakumar, July 11 : A vast area of Midnapore including Tamluk and Kontai was seriously affected by a devastating flood.The flood was caused by a heavy rainfall which the districts has not seen in 100 years. Besides river Kansabati developed a breach in weak embarkment making the situation critical. As a result about 2.5 lakh people were affected. There was no news of any death. But cattle and other domestic animals were lost. Crops of the vast fields were washed away. Numerous mud houses were collapsed. Some areas were out of bounds. People were almost without food and drinking water. Government and other welfare organizations were jumped into rescue work. Men, women and children were carried to safer places in boats. Foods , clothes were supplied to the victims. The Government had paid compensation.   

Exercise 6

Imagine that you and your friend are sailors of two ships that have recently returned from their voyages. Write a dialogue within 100 words on the different experiences of your voyages. (কল্পনা কর যে  তুমি এবং তোমার বন্ধু দুটি জাহাজের নাবিক যেগুলি সম্প্রতি তাদের সমুদ্রযাত্রা থেকে ফিরে এসেছে। তোমর ভ্রমণের বিভিন্ন অভিজ্ঞতার উপর 100 শব্দের মধ্যে একটি সংলাপ লিখ।)

[ Different Experience of Voyage ]

Raja : Hallo Rahul!

Rahul: Hallo Raja! How are you?

Raja: How are you ?

Rahul: I’m fine. How do you do?

Raja: I’m so so. When did you come back from the voyage?

Rahul: I have returned last Sunday. When did you return?

Raja: I have returned today.

Rahul: How was your voyage?

Raja: My voyage was peaceful. We reached our destination in time without any danger. We also enjoyed fair weather.

Rahul: But we faced a violent storm. All of our members spent many anxious moments. We even failed to reach our destination in time.

Raja: This pleasant voyage flash upon my inward eyes in my leisure time.

Rahul: But my voyage taught me a lot. Everyone on the ship got the experience of facing perils courageously.

Rahul: Okay. More when we meet next time.

Raja: Okay. Bye.

Rahul: Good Bye.
