Unit-1

1)I was having tea at home on the evening of 30^th January,1948, when  I  was called to

  আমি    খাচ্ছিলাম   চা    বাড়িতে         সন্ধ্যাবেলায়     ৩০শে   জানুয়ারী  ১৯৪৮  যখন আমাকে হয়েছিল ডাকা

 Birla house  by  an urgent¹  telephone.   

 বিড়লা  নিবাসে   দ্বারা   এক জরুরী     টেলিফোন     

= ১৯৪৮ সালের জানুয়ারী মাসের সন্ধ্যাবেলায় যখন আমি বাড়িতে বসে চা খাচ্ছিলাম, তখন একটি জরুরি টেলিফোনের মাধ্যমে আমাকে বিড়লা নিবাসে ডাকা হয়  ।।       (1.-আরজেন্ট )

2) Gandhiji had been shot² on his way to a   prayer meeting³.

  গান্ধিজীকে   করা হয়েছে  গুলি     তার পথে   একটি প্রার্থনা সভা/সমাবেশে  

= একটি প্রার্থনা সভা / সমাবেশে যাওয়ার পথে গান্ধিজীকে গুলি করা হয়েছে ।    (2.-শট্, 3.-প্রেয়ার মিটিং )

3) I    was  numb⁴ with shock⁵  as   I   got into the car.

 আমি  হয়েছিলাম  বিবশ     দ্বারা   আঘাত   যখন আমি   উঠেছিলাম    গাড়িতে 

= গাড়িতে উঠতে গিয়ে এমন আঘাতে আমি বিবশ / অনুভূতিহীন হয়েগিয়েছিলাম ।। (4.-নাম্ব, 5.-শক )

4) At the Birla House, Gandhiji’s relatives⁶ and followers⁷ had gathered⁸ round his

    তে   বিড়লা    নিবাসে    গান্ধিজীর      আত্মীয়          এবং    অনুগামীরা   হয়েছিল   জড়ো    চারপাশে  তার   

 body.

 দেহ           (6.-রিলেটিভস, 7.- ফলোয়ারস, 8.-গ্যাদার্ড )

= বিড়লা নিবাসে গান্ধিজীর অনুগামীরা ও আত্মীয়স্বজনেরা তার শবদেহ ঘিরে জড়ো হয়েছিল ।।

5) There was  silence9  in the room as Gandhiji  breathed his  last

   সেখানে  ছিল   নিঃস্তব্ধতা  মধ্যে    ঘরের   কেননা গান্ধিজী     নিশ্বাসত্যাগ  তার   শেষ 

= ঘরের মধ্যে নিঃস্তব্ধতা বিরাজ করছিল, কেননা গান্ধিজী তার শেষ নিঃশ্বাস ত্যাগ করেছিলেন ।। (9.-সাইলেন্স, 10.- ব্রিদড )

6) Words of Bapuji’s death had spread¹¹ through Delhi like  a  flame  fanned¹²      by  

   খবর      বাপুজীর    মৃত্যু  পড়েছিল ছড়িয়েছিল    জুড়ে     দিল্লী  মতো  এক অগ্নিশিখা  হাওয়াদেওয়া   দ্বারা                                                                                                                                       wind.

বাতাস               (11.- স্প্রেড,  12.- ফ্লেম ফ্যানড )

 = বাতাসে উসকানো আগুনের মতো বাপুজীর মৃত্যুর খবর দিল্লী জুড়ে ছড়িয়ে পড়েছিল ।।

7) Sad groups of men and women had collected¹³ around Birla House.

  দুঃখী   দল      পুরুষের  এবং  স্ত্রীলোকের হয়েছিল   জড়ো        চারপাশে   বিড়লা   নিবাস

= বিষন্ন / দুঃখী নর–নারীর দল বিড়লা নিবাসের চারপাশে জড়ো হয়েছিল / ভিড় জমিয়েছিল ।। (13.-কালেলটেড )

8) Out of every window one  could see   a  brown blur¹⁴ of faces.

   থেকে    প্রত্যেক জানালা  কেউ    পারত  দেখতে  এক   বাদামী   অস্পষ্ট      মুখ

= প্রতিটি জানালা দিয়েই দেখা যাচ্ছিল অস্পষ্ট বাদামী রঙের মানুষের মুখের ভিড় ।। (14.-ব্রাউন ব্লার )

9 )They did not make a sound.                  10) There was an unnatural¹⁵ silence.

   তারা    না   করছিল   এক  শব্দ              সেখানে   ছিল এক   অস্বাভাবিক   নিঃস্তব্ধতা

= তারা একটুও শব্দ করছিল না ।।          = সেখানে এক অস্বাভাবিক নিঃস্তব্ধতা বিরাজ করছিল ।। (15.আননেচারাল)

11) It was as if   time        stood  still   for   those few minutes.

    এটি ছিল    যেন  সময়      থমকেদাঁড়িয়ে    জন্য  ওই    কয়েক  মিনিট

= যেন মনে হচ্ছিল সময় ওই কয়েক মিনিটের জন্য থমকে দাঁড়িয়েগেছে । 

12) The people were  too  stunned¹⁵ to speak in the beginning.

       লোকেরা     হয়েছিল  এতটা   বিহ্বল     কথাবলতে         শুরুতে

= শুরুর দিকে লোকেরা এতটাই হতভম্বছিল যে কথাই বলতে পারছিল না ।।   (15.-স্ট্যানড )

13) Later they clamoured¹⁶ wildly, shouting and crying. 

      পরে   তারা       দাবীকরল    উচ্চস্বরে     চিৎকরে  এবং  কাঁদতে 

= পরে তারা উচ্চস্বরে চিৎকার করে এবং কাঁদতে কাঁদতে দাবী করতে লাগল ।।    (16.-ক্যামারড )

14) They jostled¹⁷ one another in a stampede¹⁸ to break into the house.

    তারা   ধাক্কাধাক্কি  একে অপরের    মধ্যে     পদপৃষ্ট         ঢোকার জন্য        বাড়িতে

= তারা বাড়িতে ঢুকে পরার জন্য ধাক্কাধাক্কি শুরু করেছিল যে পদপৃষ্ট হওয়ার সম্ভাবনা তৈরি হয়েছিল ।। (17.-জসলড, 18.-স্ট্যামপিড )

15) They calmed¹⁸ a little when it was announced¹⁹ that they would be allowed to see

     তারা   শান্তহল       একটু     যখন এটি  হল      ঘোষনা       যে   তাদের  দেওয়াহবে   অনুমতি    দেখতে

16) When one   is faced with the shock of a loved one’s    death, one whimpers²¹: “What

     যখন   একজন  হয় সম্মুখীন সঙ্গে    আঘাতের     প্রিয়জনের একজনের  মৃত্যু একজন  গুমরেকাঁদে      কি

will become of me now that  he has left me?”

    হবে       আমার  এখন  যে   সে ছেড়েগেল আমাকে

= মানুষ যখন ভালোবাসার কোন লোকের মৃত্যুর শোকের সম্মুখীন হয়, সে গুমরে কাঁদে : “তিনিতো আমায় ছেড়ে চলে গেলেন, আমার কি হবে ?”                    (21.- হুইমপারস)

      এটা   ছিল   নিশ্চিতভাবে     প্রশ্ন        বেশিরভাগ    মনে        শোকার্ত         মানুষজন

Unbelieving²⁶.

= একই প্রশ্ন আমাদের অনেকের মনেও ছিল যারা তখনও পর্যন্ত মর্মাহত হয়ে ও অবিশ্বাস নিয়ে বসেছিলাম ।।

    আমরা   শুনছিলাম               সম্প্রচার        বলছে      লোকেদের    ভারতবর্ষের     যে    তাদের  বাপু   ছিল

no more.

 না    আর

= আমরা বেতার সম্প্রচার শুনছিলাম যা ভারতবর্ষের জনগনকে জানাচ্ছিল যে তাদের বাপু আর নেই ।।
