1) Sidda was hanging about1 the gate at a moment when Mr. Sivasanker was standing in the front veranda2 of his house, brooding over3 the servant problem.

2) “Sir, do you want a servant?” Sidda asked.
= সিদ্দা জিঞ্জাসা করল , ‘বাবু , আপনার / আপনাদের কি কাজের লোক লাগবে / চাই ?’
3) “Come in”, said Mr. Sivsanker.
= শিবশংকর বাবু বললেন, ‘ ভিতরে এস ‘ ।
4) As Sidda opened the gate and came in, Mr. Sivsankar subjected him to a scrutiny4 and said to himself, “Doesn’t seem to be a bad sort…. at any rate , the fellow looks tidy5.
= সিদ্দা ফটক খুলে ভিতরে আসতেই শিবশংকর বাবু তাকে আপাদমস্তক নিরীক্ষন করে মনে মনে বললেন , ‘ দেখে খারাপ বলে মনে হচ্ছে না … যাই হোক ছোঁড়াটাকে দেখেতো বেশ পরিচ্ছন্ন বলেই মনে হচ্ছে । (6.-স্ক্রুটিনি ;5.-টাইডি 😉
5) “Where were you before?” he asked.
= তিনি জিঞ্জাসা করলেন , ‘ আগে কোথায় কাজ করতে ? ’
6) Sidda said , “In a bungalow there,” and indicated6 a vague7 somewhere, “ in the doctor’s house”
= সিদ্দা বলল, ‘ ওখানের একটা বাংলোতে ’ , বলে সে অস্পষ্ট কোনএকদিকে নির্দেশ করে বলল , ‘ একটা ডাক্তারের বাড়িতে ’ ।

8) “I don’t know, master”, Sidda said. “He lives near the market”.

9) “Why did they send you away ?”

10) “They left the town, master,” Sidda said, giving the stock reply8.

had”.

14) Leela their five- year – old daughter came out, looked at Sidda and gave a cry of joy.

15) “Oh, Father!” she said , “I like him.

19) Sidda was given two meals a day and four rupees a month, in return for which he washed clothes, tended9 the garden, ran errands10, chopped11 wood and look after Leela.

36) “Not if we stand on the roof here”, he said.

37) But if you stand on a coconut tree you can touch the sky.

101) “ Can’t you tell the story of the elephant ?” Leela asked . “ No.”

102) Leela made a noise of deprecation85 and asked , “ Why should not Sidda sit in our chair , Mother ?”
= লীলা একটা হতাশাজনক শব্দ করে বলল , ‘ মা, সিদ্দা কেন আমাদের চেয়ারে বসতে পারবে না ? ’ (85-.-ডিপ্রিকেশান; )
103) Mother didn’t answer the question .

104) Leela said a moment later,“ Sidda is gone because he wouldn’t be allowed86 to sleep inside the house just as we do

131) I want to play with him .
আমি ওর সাথে খেলতে চাই ’ ।।
132) “ My dear child ,” said the police inspector , “ he is a thief .”
= পুলিশ ইন্সপেক্টর বলল, ‘ আমার ছোট্টসোনা , ও একটা চোর
133) “ Let him be ,” Leela replied haughtily102 (102-.হটিলি;)
=‘ হোকগে সে চোর ’, লীলা উদ্ধতভাবে উত্তর দিল ।।
134)“ What a devil103 you must be to steal104 a thing from such an innocent105child !” remarked106the

ইন্সপেক্টর = ইন্সপেক্টর/ দারোগা মন্তব্য করলেন, ‘ তুমি কতবড় শয়তান যে এমন একটা নিষ্পাপ শিশুর জিনিস চুরি করেছ !
135) “Even now it is not too late.
= ‘ এখনও খুব দেরি হয়নি ।
136) Return it.
= ওটা ফেরত দাও ।
137) I will let you off, provided you promise not to do such a thing again
= আমি তোমায় ছেড়ে দেব, যদি তুমি প্রতিঞ্জা কর যে এমন কাজ আর করবেনা কখোনো ।
138)“ Leela’s father and mother , too , joined in this appeal107 (107-.অ্যাপিল;)
= লীলার বাবা এবং মা এই একই আবেদনে যোগ দিল ।।
139)Leela felt disgusted108 with the whole business and saida, “ leave him alone , he hasn’t taken

140) “ You are not at all a reliable109 prosecution110 witness111, my child , “ observed112 the inspector

= ‘ আমার সোনা, তুমি এই মামলার একেবারেই নির্ভরযোগ্য সাক্ষী নও ’, ইন্সপেক্টর কৌতুকভরে মন্তব্য করলেন ।
141) No , he hasn’t taken it !” Leela screamed114 (114-.স্ক্রিমড;)
= ‘ না, ও ওটা নেয়নি ’, লীলা চিৎকার করে বলল ।।
142) Her father said , “Baby , if you don’t behave , I will be very angry with you .”
= তার বাবা বলল , ‘ সোনা / বাছা , তুমি যদি ভালো ব্যবহার না কর তাহলে আমি তোমার ওপর খুব রেগে যাবো ’ ।।
143) Half an hour later the inspector said to the constable , “ Take him to the station
= আধঘন্টা পরে ইন্সপেক্টর হাবিলদারকে বলল , ‘ ওকে থানায় নিয়ে যাও ’ ।।
144) I think I shall have to sit with him tonight .”
=‘আমার মনে হয় আজ রাতে ওর সাথে আমাকে বসতে হবে’
145) The constable took Sidda by the hand and turned to go .
= হাবিলদার সিদ্দার হাত ধরল এবং তাকে নিয়ে যাবার জন্য ঘুরল ।।
146) Leela ran behind them crying , “ Don’t take him .
= লীলা কাঁদতে কাঁদতে তাদের পিছনে ছুটল ,‘ওকে নিয়ে যেও না ,
147) Leave him here , leave him here .”
= ওকে এখানে ছেড়ে দাও , ওকে এখানে ছেড়ে দাও ’ ।।
148) She clung115 to Sidda’s hand .
= সে সিদ্দার হাত জড়িয়ে ধরল । সিদ্দা তার
149) He looked at her mutely116, like an animal
= দিকে জন্তুর মতো বোবা দৃষ্টিতে তাকিয়েরইল (116-.মিউটলি;)
150) Mr. Sivasanker carried Leela back into the house .
= শিবশংকরবাবু লীলাকে বাড়িতে নিয়ে এলেন ।।
151)Leela was in tears .
= লীলার চোখে তখনও জল ।।
152) Everyday when Mr. Sivsanker came home he was asked by his wife ,“ Any news of the jewl?”

and by his daughter, “ Where is Sidda?”

153) “They still have him in the lock up , though he is very stubborn117 and wouldn’t say anything
about the jewel”,said Mr, Sivsanker
= ‘ তারা এখনও তাকে হাজতে রেখেছে , যদিও সে খুব একগুঁয়ে,এবং গয়নার ব্যাপারে সে কিচ্ছু বলেনি ’ , শিবশংকরবাবু বললেন ।

155) “Oh, these fellows who have been in jail once or twice lose all fear.
= ‘ ও, এই লোকগুলো যারা একদুবার জেলে গিয়েছে , তাদের ভয়ডর বলে কিছুই নেই ।।
156) Nothing can make them confess.120”
= কোন কিছুই তাদের স্বীকার করাতে পারবে না ’ ।। (120-.কনফেস;)
157) A few days later, putting her hand into the tamarind pot121 in the kitchen, Leela’s mother

= কয়েকদিন পরে লীলার মা তেঁতুলের পাত্রের মধ্যে হাত ঢুকিয়ে হারটা তুলে আনলেন ।।
158) She took it to the tap and washed off the coating122 of tamarind on it.

160) When it was shown to her, Leela said, “ Give it here.”

162) “How did it get into the tamarind pot?” mother asked.

165) “Yes”

167) “Long ago, the other day”.

=‘ তুমি এর আগে একথা বলোনি কেন ?

’=সিদ্দা বলল, ‘ আমি জানি না ’ ।।
170) When father came home and was told, he said “The child must not have any chain hereafter.
= যখন লীলার বাবা বাড়ি ফিরলেন এবং তাকে সব কথা বলা হল , তিনি বললেন ,’ এরপর থেকে মেয়ের গলায় কোন হার যেন না থাকে ’।।
171) Didn’t I tell you that I saw her carrying in her hand once or twice?
= আমি তোমায় বলিনি যে ওকে দু একবার আমি হারটা হাতে নিয়ে ঘুরতে দেখছি ।।
172) She must have dropped it into the pot sometime….And all this bother124 on account of her.
= সে হয়তো নিঃশ্চয়ই কোন সময় এটিকে পাত্রের মধ্যে ফেলেদিয়েছে এবং ওর জন্যই আমাদের এত ঝামেলা পোয়াতে হয়েছে ।(বদার)
173) “What about Sidda?” asked Mother.
= মা জিঞ্জাসা করল, ‘ সিদ্দার কি হবে ? ’
174) “I will tell the inspector tomorrow …in case, we could not kept a criminal like him in the
house.
= আমি কাল ইন্সপেক্টরকে আগামিকাল বলব, যাইহোক ওর মতো একজন অপরাধীকে আমরা আর বাড়িতে রাখতে পারিনা
